My lizards and cage setup.... Suggestions?

here is the male.. Ill get better pics tomorrow morning when he is cold and cant spaz out..

Here is my super fat and growing female....

Here is their cage....

These were both found in very different places... The female was from a semi dry area with dead timber and rocks She was found on a dead pine tree on the ground. The male was found in super dry eastern Oregon with sand/rocks and sage brush.... so Im thinking about cutting some thin veneer to cover the back of the cage and turning that into the bottom. Then making some trim to go around it... that way I can have deeper substrate in there. They will have about 12" top to bottom and have more than twice the ground room Then I will be able to get a rock cave and some wood structures in there... Im totally open to suggestions.
BTW if the female is already full of eggs, I think they will all be duds... There was no way for them to be fertilized... Unless there is some way she could have been fertilized twice before I found her... So I will probably be left hoping that she mates and has yet one more clutch this year....

So I just went searching for the two lizards. Found them wrapped around each other in their hide. Lol..... I quickly put it back in hopes that I didn’t ruin the moment for them!

Question....... So if the female already has eggs in her, and the male is mating her now.... will it firtilize the eggs? I mean... dont they know when its time to screw or something like that?

I’ve done some thinking. Uh-Oh lol

I believe, the females develop the eggs, and then the male fertilizes them. In which case, how can a male fertilize an egg that is indeed NOT there?

I heard from greatballzoffire that the lizards hold the eggs for thirty five days. LLLreptile sells the incubators. Order it now! Cuz it might take at least a week to get to you unless you pay out the ying yang for shipping.

Well... I have been doing some thinking... I have a small cooler(12 pack size) and I would be willing to cut into it... I have a 3’x3’ piece of plexi glass and a fish tank heater... I also have a pump... I think I may be able to build one and only have to buy a thermostat/ hydrometer... Im going to tinker with it a bit and see if I can make it work... Its big enough for at least one clutch...

Some people use a cooler, a submersible fish tank water heater, and yeah!

Just use a tall enough tupperware container so that when the eggs hatch the lizards can’t get out of it and drown in the cooler full of warm water. Fill the container with at least an inch of moist substrate. About two to three inches of water in the cooler, and set the water heater to 82 degrees and off you go! Also some how seal the lid so that you can get 88%-92% humidity. Or you could just use the tupperware container lid to control the humidity. Start with a small hole, and if the humidity is still too high, then make that hole bigger or another small hole. If eggs get too dry they die, too moist they’ll drowned. So you want to set this up days to a week before she lays. When moistening the substrate for eggs, soak it with water, and squeeze it out with one hand to get it with no drips. You want it a snow ball kind of mold; to where it will clump together, but break apart with a light touch of one finger. This method makes it moist!

Quite a few people use this method actually, so I don’t see why it would not work.

You may know some of the things I’ve mentioned, but oh well! Once I start at point A, I must get all the way to point B. It helps me remember all the details for next year lol

Also, the best time to candle the eggs with an LED light is two to four weeks. Sometimes one week. After four weeks, if you don’t see any veins in the eggs after you already have previously do not get rid of them. It just means the lizards are growing which in turn is blocking the light from ’peeking’! Good luck with your clutch man! I sure hope mine hatch lol

Also, ditch the pump. You don’t need it. If the humidity starts to drop in the egg container after a while just carefully pour a little into the corner of the container while avoiding the eggs. Don’t pour too much though, it’s easier to add water then it is to take water out.

BTW Jared,
I talked to a biologist yesterday about these guys.... He said that the males sperm can actually carry over into the second clutch! So I may have some fertile eggs after all... Also, they have to mate when the female first starts egg production for them to become fertilized.... Ill keep you updated, Im going to go get the thermostat tomorrow and build the incubator... Ill post pics

I cant see or feel eggs yet so I think I have time... I removed a tick from her armpit this morning.... and she is mid shed today.. This morning I noticed the tick and while removing it with a hot needle, I noticed that she had some skin starting to peel on her face... I then soaked her in some luke warm water for about ten min. She has the floor of the cage covered with bits of skin now...lol

Well... I have the cooler/incubator all up and running. Stable at 82* and 90% humidity... I think Im going to not use the lid and make one out of plexi so that I can drill holes as needed and view the thermo/hydrometer without removing the lid... I new it would be very stable so I got the flukers digi meter but it didnt have remote sensors.. Also, I have a pet shop going out of business down the street and they have everything 50%+ off... Including reptiles... 2 BIG veiled chameleons 1 Burmese python 1 baby white milk snake and 1 golden gecko... I picked up a rexzilla UVB mini hood because I wont be keeping them outside during the day as soon as it starts to cool down.. Also bought 4(if anyone wants one) mistr lizard deluxe cage misters... They have allot of stuff so if anyone wants some good deals let me know... I would be happy to pass the deals along as long as you pay shipping...

I’m just looking back at your pictures & I noticed the female. I’ve never seen a female with so many colors... How long have you had her? If that is a female, you’re lucky to get such rich colors in one. Has anyone else out there had experiences with such bright & rich blue colored bellies in females? I assume you would plan on keeping her for good regardless of gender. But if she doesn’t develop eggs within six months, you might wanna rethink the gender or have her sexed. All the females I’ve seen lack most traces of color in their belly &, if any, keep very small amounts of it on their neck.

You did look at the pictures of their vent areas correct? Unless "she" is a he/she because she has laid eggs already. I thought she was a he as well as others on here... I was convinced and therefor didn’t really look for eggs... But when I did, I found eight dried up eggs.. all of which had veins... bummer deal... We will see what happens in the coming months... And yes, she is very bright and is interesting because I have seen her doing push-ups too...weird..
