 Hi I’m New!

Hi! I’m a new member here. I have a fire belly toad named Coconut, and a western fence lizard named Winky. I am so glad I am here. I have two questions: how do you tell if a fire belly toad is a male or female (I think he is a male but I’m not sure. I get different answers every time!)? And, How do you tell if a fence lizard is a male or female? Thank you and good bye!

Uh-oh, a new person. LOL kidding.!

I’m not sure about the toad, you oughta visit the toad forum for that.. lol

Fence lizards when babies are hard to tell whether or not they’re male or female, but it’s possible.

The male lizards have two enlarged post anal scales, right below their vent on their tail base. The females don’t support these. Also the males have more broad of a tail base.

The males also tend to have more coloring on their understand than the females. The males also do push ups and strut their stuff to attract females, and or to protect their territory.

In this picture is a male.. If you look, you can see the enlarged scales..

If you’re having trouble sexing, try posting a picture of his/her belly for us to judge.

Generally if the blue coloring is light & not very prominent on their belly, they are females. Males tend to have lots of blue, darker blue along their bellies, and even more enhanced color patterns during mating seasons. My female fencey has just a little tiny light blue patch on each side of her neck.

okay I will try to make time to post a pic of her. But I’m pretty sure SHE is a female because she has very little coloring... only a slight turquoise on her neck. I will check right now if he is standing up and leaning against the vivarium (he always does that!) right now. Thanks!

Yeah. That is my temporary tank until I get a 10 or 20 soon. It has been only about a few weeks now. She is 2 inches from nose to tail tip.. really small! But gettin another tank for her soon don’t worry! And I put a lot of hiding places and stuff... so it’s basically a 4-5 star hotel for her until i find time to design a bigger tank!

If it has absolutely no color underneath and only has color on the neck, I would still consider the gender unknown. I think you just want a boy really badly. My girl has what looks like larger scales underneath, but it’s not the same as what the guys have. You should really get onto posting that pic
