 Taming a fence lizard

I am wondering how I can handle Winky, without harming, scaring, or losing her. I wanna tame her, but I don’t know the best way.

Don’t handle her too often, you’ll just stress her out. Fence lizards are NOT the constant hands-on type of lizards u might want them to be. They do best handled no more than once or twice in one day. Best way to tame a fence lizard in my little experience is just like any other pet, you give it occasional human contact that implements positive reinforcement & in turn promotes your relationship. You can do things like let her sit on your arm or leg (She’ll love stealing your body-temperature) and watch tv or a movie laying very still with her, then return her to her cage. Or something like handling her lightly right before you feed her... she’ll associate warmth & food with you ... so you’ll be set.

How do I make sure, if she does escape, that I could find her again?

Ummm, good eyes? Don’t handle her outdoors. Keep her & handle her in an enclosed space.

So far, this isn’t a problem for me, my fencey already comes over to me to see what I’m up to if I turn away from her or hide somewhere. Kind of annoying when I walk outta the room & she tries to follow, but I’m working on that.

I can handle my female to an extent... If I were to set her down, she would bolt for cover... The male was very small when I caught him, maybe 4" tip to tail and he is a freak... I cant even get my hands on him to try to hold him.. How I caught him by hand is beyond me! Maybe someday Ill be able to handle them more.... But until then, Ill just hope for babies so that I can tame them from the start.

GSB: Negative Ghost-rider. Well, at least Do NOT ever handle her during bath time, the chemicals we use as soaps can be very harmful to your lizard, and I’m sure our body oil isn’t good for them, plus I’ve picked up that they don’t really like to swim.
A bathtub might be an ok place to handle a lizard if you’ve thoroughly cleaned the tub and rinsed it multiple times. But This is only if you feel you must handle the lizard and is not really recommended. Remember we’ve told you, fence lizards are ok to handle occasionally, but they much rather run around on there own & not be touched.

Jared, As I said before I got her from her previous owner (who had a 6, now 7 year old son). The pet was his son’s & I think this may explain with she loves me so much. I got her when she was almost 2 inches nose to vent & 4 inches head to tail & after they had had her for at least 6-7 months. He had gotten her as a tiny baby that could sit on his son’s pinky & fit, so not any longer than 2 inches head to tail. I think he may have wanted to get rid of her because she ended up being a colorless female. I don’t really want to ask about anything she could have been through, but I’m guessing the way I treat her is a drastic upgrade. Though he seems like a nice kid, I’m sure being a child’s pet plaything is never fun. & yes it is pretty crazy, I can try and take a video of her following me, but i never know when shes gonna sit still where I put her or follow me. For an example, I’ll have her sitting on the carpet(rug) in my room & since she hasn’t moved off the rug the whole hour I’ve been on the computer, I’ll leave her where she is and take a quick trip to the bathroom, which is out in the hallway around the corner. By the time I leave the bathroom to go back, a little less than half the time she’ll be sitting in the hallway looking around or she’ll have peeked her head into the bathroom. I know she’s following me because if I don’t leave, she stays put. She rarely tries to venture past the limitations of where I set her, as long as I’m around. As in, she wouldn’t get of the bed if I put her on it, but she would love exploring a stack of clothes on her turf... it’s not quite like a lost puppy, but I set her down often and let her roam around. I think I’ve said before, I let her run around on the shower curtain while I shower, & let her sit on the lamp shade or the carpet, while I’m doing mundane tasks. She hates going back into the cage & normally tries to hang onto me and/or run up my arm when I go to put her back. I used to let her sit on my bed all the time, but have stopped doing it as much because it’s where she loves to poop & tends to poop much more often than her cage if I let her sit there once a day. She’s a great pet, only downside is she has almost no color, Just two UNC/teal colored 2 centimeter squares(tiny) on each side of her neck.
