 Important questions to me.

OKAY!

My dad caught me a baby fence lizard where he works a little over a month ago. After all my research I am almost positive it is a female. I am guessing she was born this summer because she is very small. She is healthy and doing well in the 20 gallon habitat I have made for her and she is eating 2 or 3 small crickets a day. My dad has been keeping his eyes open for a male because I would like to mate them when they come to that age. So here is my question:
*How old are they usually when they start mating?
*When my female does lay her eggs, what do I do? I need to know exactly how to make a place for them to hatch. I am completely clueless.
*If I am supposed to leave them in the habitat with their mom, do I need to take the male out?

When these are answered, I will probably have more to ask, but I dont want to overload so....

Thanks =)
-Megan

They have to be one or two years old i think. You need an incubator homemade will do just fine. Make sure you pull the eggs out in the position they are the breathing holes are on the top of that pose if you turn they die. You may need to seperate the mother when she does get pregnant.
PS your exactly planning what i am- i’m looking out for a FEMALE to breed them. I already have my male. Mine is about a month old and wild caught. I REALLY WANT TO BREED THEM.

Well thank you very much =) How exactly do I make a homemade incubator? And I am glad you told me about the breathing holes, thats the first time I have ever heard of anything like that. And how will I know when she gets pregnant?

I would love to bread them. I hope I do everything right. I am trying to find out as much as I can now so I will be prepared for it later. Where we live, there is so many of them....so I am planning on catching as many as I can and breading them to give away. So, I am getting as much information as I can right now.

Just choose a container. Ziploc or a peanut can would be great. get some ecoearth and make it moist. Put it in the container. Get a heater, thermometer, and humidity gauge to make sure everything is fine. They hatch in about 50-70 days. I don’t remember if I included this in another message or not, but they breed around May and babies hatch around July-August. Don’t worry if the eggs look wrinkly at first. They should pop up in about a week to two weeks. :)

Where can I find a heater, thermometer and humidity gauge? And what temp. do I keep it on? Do I mist the eggs and ecoearth?

Thanks for the other information. =)

Yes to Jared Post!!

...and breathing holes? Are you fing serious???!!

I think it’s more along the lines of the fact that turning the egg can crush the embryo with the yolk or disconnect vital blood vessels that connect the embryo to the yolk sack, and this kills the baby inside.

Yeah, I have been looking. Just not found exactly what I am looking for yet. Its still gonna be awhile before she is old enough to mate, so I will keep looking.

You do mist the eco-earth. The temp should be about 80-90 f. You can get a humidity gauge, thermometer, and heater either online or petsmart or petco.

Actually _JD was correct with his above statement. Embryos inside the egg don’t actually take their first breath of air till they poke their head out of the egg.

But, in turn the eggs indeed need some oxygen while the embryos develope so that they do not drown.

Too much air without humidity will dry out the eggs and kill the embryos.
