 Meet Buddy. lol

When I first seen him I couldn’t believe it. He was in shed and he had bright vibrant patches of gold/bronze on his back and sides. All of my female fence lizards don’t have this trait. They’re just black and silver... Well here are some pictures of Buddy!

Buddy picked a rough route to climb the wall! I seem him struggling to get high so I decided to snap a pic lol

Him on a sheet of paper with a penny, but no good lighting, for size ref...

His vibrant underside!

And, his gold/bronze coloring. I took multiple pics with my LG Versa phone to try to capture it, and it turned out this was the best one. Will have much better pictures once I get my Sony camera soon.

If you have firefox you can right click the pictures and select view image to see the full view image. They’re actually bigger than what they are on repticzone(800x600). If you don’t have firefox, I would suggest downloading it for your multi purpose browser!

A most handsome fellow! Where did you get him?
What subspecies are Buddy and your other fencies?
Mine are all Western fence lizards (Sceloporus occidentalis).

Mine are all Eastern. I prefer the eastern more than the westerns because I like the black, dark grays, and silvers. And now even more the golds! lol

Jared, You’re not the only one with coloring comments LOL--post soon to come. I’m not sure what you mean though, all the males around here are normally more of a brown-golden color on top & always have blue underneath. My two in captivity have more reddish color in them. The females are gray, silver, & black & I doubt they have any coloration underneath, they don’t have much if they do & the few I’ve seen fully underneath didn’t have any. I would guess it’s evolutionary feature & the females here have adapted to blend in the best with the gray bark tree’s natural to the east where they run to hide. While the males are more like to produce offspring when the can blend in on the ground & cover more territory to obtain more mates & also distract predators from the females while on the tree/running.

Buddy is a beautiful specimen, but how is he drastically different from most?? I can probably catch you another male with gold in it around here if you want to come get another one. I still love your rock wall.

 Meet Buddy. lol

LOL four years ago I had probably nine eastern fence lizards. And from what I can remember none of them had the gold trait. I guess they were all female? eh? lol I don’t get to see many lizards in the wild anymore, and I do know that they are very different in colors from the west to east of the united states. But, I was just excited and amazed to see his colors; I guess for the first time on any lizard lol!

My background is killer cool!

It’s quite easy, get Styrofoam, glue multiple pieces together to get the desired size you want. Tank an exacto knife and or a lighter to form it how you want. Use cement or mortar or grout to give it the rock texture, let dry, then paint with non toxic paints, let dry, then seal it with a non toxic sealant.

All that is very easy and quite understandable!

Google DIY tank background for videos!

I decided to buy the background I have because it’s a very high grade Styrofoam and it doesn’t weigh a ton due to cement. It’s very high in detail and very hard to damage.

But yeah, happy making!

I know it takes time and all but a one of a kind background can sure be made when you make it yourself!

No, no, no Jared! You know I’m not that stupid, I’m not saying your non-shiny darker lizards were all female because they didn’t have gold in them or because they didn’t shine in the light! I’m just stating my experience, that I’ve seen plenty of lizards around here that do have that feature as far as I know. My experience also includes the fact that out of all the females I’ve seen I didn’t see any blue underneath, and of all the females I’ve ever caught (only 5-10) didn’t seem to have ANY color really except a barely visible coloring on the neck, even though elsewhere they obviously do have color. My Female Ginny:

Maybe the Gold is something they’ve adapted more recently, or maybe it’s regionally specific?... I’ve NEVER personally seen colors or behavior of fence lizards outside of the Northern Southeast US (NC, SC, TN, VA, GA). So I don’t really know. I know I want to see more pictures of BUDDY so I can get a better understanding of the Gold & bronze you see, it might be different from the shininess I’m used to seeing around here. As you know, I’m in NC... & I thought it was in at least half of the colored lizards around here.

I’m back to full time in school right now, so the background might have to wait, but it seems easy & I will be making one or at least attempting one in the future. Thank you guys for the advice.
