 Brumation

Cool. Now I’m interested in the ’Brumation’ period that Jared mentioned in the ’Cannibal, territorial’ Topic. So I guess I’m asking Jared because he knows his answers, but anyone else who has answers and suggestions please share. I know it’s a long series of questions, but consider that I know nothing of brumating besides what I just read for the last 30 minutes. I did search these fence-specific forums for information I was looking for and I still find it funny that I can find 10 pages of nothing!!

Ok Question(s) .. ?

What are your opinions on Brumating? Do you think that because it’s natural for fence lizards especially in temperate climates, it helps keep a lizard healthy or normal? What about fenceys that are older and wild-caught, like my male, and are already accustomed to a standard annual brumation period? Is it body-shock to move him to 12 months of warm climate a year? [FYI: He’s showing all the signs, while on his current spring/summer day cycle. He started eating more & sleeping more and later a week or two ago. Since them he’s burrowed many times during the day when Ginny’s out and about like right now & all this morning.]

Assuming the information I just read is all correct, What are the other signs that your fence lizard is in need of brumating, signs typical of fence lizards?

Do you think/know it extends the lifespan of a lizard? For youngsters in the forum that think , this is like hibernation and also means he’ll seem dead for a few months with hardly any movement.

Does the initiation or start of the brumation period help induce mating patterns, as it does with a few other lizard species?

When do you start trying to encourage brumation for fence lizards, and how long should it last?

How do you properly start encouraging brumation, what are the light hours, temperature conditions, food requirements, water and moisture needs, and how should you properly edge off food and light? Does it help to bath a fence lizard every day or two while introducing them into brumating to hydrate and to induce bowel movements, I just read it helps for bearded dragons.

How do you properly design & build a hibernaculum for a fencey? or at least how do/did you build yours?

What is the amount of care you have to put into fence lizards while they are brumating?

What conditions should you apply to a hibernaculum during a fence lizard’s brumation period? (I.e. Life sustaining needs like temperature, moisture, water, food).

When do they normally stop brumating? How can you tell they need to stop brumating?

How do you bring them out of brumation? Is it a slow process where the days get longer and longer and food intake goes up and up or do they wake up one day & go back to normal?

How long does the brumation last in the wild, or even what are the differences besides the obvious, in brumation in the wild and captive brumation.

What are the risks involved with brumating your fenceys, and while fenceys are brumating?

Is there anything I should be extra careful/cautious to prevent, and how would I prevent it. I read that a vet checkup is good right before brumation to make sure bacteria and diseases are absent.

Are things like Acidophiliz+ a good idea or bad idea for fenceys? What (other) products are helpful?

I might have left out stuff, or over-asked some things. Some things might answer multiple questions, I don’t know without the answers. Once again, I know it’s a lot of questions, but Any and All Help is Appreciated!!!

Holy Crap! lol you sure do have a lot of questions!

I don’t know much about it, but with the way I see it, I’m going to allow them to brumate because I don’t want them messing up their natural clock. I guess it will help come breeding season; April.

GreatBallzoFire knows a ton about fence lizards. Maybe she’ll(? lol) float through and fill you in on brumation!

JARAhh!! you answered NOTHING!! Lol, I thought for sure you could answer at least half of those questions.

You should at least know how YOU made your fencey’s hibernaculum, if you have brumated them in the past or are planning on brumating soon...

Still looking for some answers then, I’ll take links too.

 Brumation

LOL never have.

Just put them through a cooling period, like it is in the wild. and then come march/april slowly start bringing up the temps in the tank and they will come out when they decide to.

Jared, you should look up other Lizard’s brumation techniques... with other lizards like beardies, you have to continue to water them, but stop feeding them, some alter the light cycle but not cut it completely. Many people make hibernaculums with a small box with bedding and put it in another box with shredded paper insulation. Like i said, I looked at information and found lots of it pertaining to other pets, including information on possible benefits and warnings on the possible dangers. It did not include anything about fenceys, or very much about avoiding the dangers it said were possible.... cooling to what temperature? It ok if you don’t know much either, I’m just asking because I’m not going to risk stopping there feeding because I think they are brumating.

This is from an article on brumation I read:

"Remember, not cold enough and your pet will not be truly brumating. Too cold, and they may not wake up at all."

Google the word "brumation" .... It’s reptile’s version of hibernation. Hibernation is a term used for mammals.

 Brumation

Hibernation is also used as a term for amphibians.

Wanna be fascinated for at least 15-30 minutes with a complex and captivating new idea stemmed from animal’s abilities to Hibernate!! Everyone Google ’hibernation inducement trigger (HIT)’ as FAST as You CAN! I was transfixed on learning about it for what seemed like hours.
