How to determine male or female!
A lot of new comers are always asking, how do I tell if my lizard is a male or a female? Well this is how! and it’s the most effective way! Coloring does help, but it’s not always accurate. I have many different types of lizards that I house, and currently the one that I’m using as an example is the youngest of them all. It’s not an eastern/western fence lizard, but it does indeed carry the same sexual characteristics when it comes to the enlarged post anal scales... Below is some type of lizard, not sure what it is yet lol, BUT it’s a male! The coins in the picture are real and life size. I just used a magnifying lens to take these pictures. and, the reason why I picked such a young lizard, is to show people that even in hatchling lizards you can look and see if it’s male or female. I actually had a western fence lizard a couple weeks ago, but I had to let him go because he wasn’t eating well. He was no more than two weeks old, and at first glance, I knew he was a male because he had the enlarged post anal scales below his vent. And to the picture! It’s the lizard next to a dime and a gold dollar for size reference. The picture in the bottom left corner of the picture is his vent. You can clearly see his enlarged post anal scales just below the diagonal lines. This lizard is definitely a male! and I’m planning on keeping him for my adult female of the same breed. Generally in fence lizards, a.k.a. blue bellies, the males do intend to have more blue on their bellies and throats, during mating season. and although my male fence lizard has a lot more blue than the females, I still choose to only abide by the enlarged post anal scale sexing characteristic!
