Help with Fence lizards in my yard

Hello, I’m new here and have some questions about the Fence Lizards in my yard. At least that’s what I think they are. I live in Corona, CA.
I noticed some holes being dug and I believe I have two areas where eggs have been laid. Plus I actually saw her digging one of them. Problem is we are doing some minor renovations in the backyard and I’m not sure what to do with the two areas. It is possible to leave it be for awhile, I just want to know what I should do while they are in the ground to ensure survival. I also would like to know about how long it takes before they come out. How far are they underground? Should I make sure no water gets in the area? What is a safe distance to step from where she dug? One of the nests is next to a roof gutter drain.
Also, since we are renovating our yard, I wanted to make it habitat friendly for the lizards. Any suggestions on what to add to the yard that would be favorable to them? Its mostly dirt and cement right now..they obviously seem to like that!
Any help would be appreciated!

They usually hatch by August. As for the rest, I’m not sure how to work around it or how to protect it.

But as for making it more favorable, bluebellies LOVE rocks. They live near mountains and rocky hills, so it’s best to emulate something like that. Just get some medium-sized boulders, and you can put them in your yard. Try to make it look natural, maybe put rocks together to form crevices. Make it so they have some sort of place to hide away during the night. A simple shallow region under one of the rocks will do. If you want to go further, place some bushes around to add security, and to possibly even trap in bugs. After that, just simple basking rocks and bushes will do, but if you want, you can add a small tree in there too.

*I personally wouldn’t put cactus there though...

They don’t like rocks! It burns their bellies! That’s why they go underground for shade! I wouldn’t do the renovation unless I REALLY wanted too. So just take the eggs and take care of them. Also, the lizards don’t exactly dig too far underground so maybe you could out your arm in there and they’ll probaly go out the other side of the burrow. Then relocate them until the renovation is done. They’ll come back afterwards for their eggs which you should leave outside back on the nests.

Calm down Galanoth, I mean ACTUAL, natural rocks. You’re getting confused with artificial heat rocks, which DO burn their bellies because they tend to heat up too hot. Natural rocks are entirely different. Go outside into the chaparral. There isn’t a bluebelly there that ISN’T on a rock or some sort of rock-like surface. They LOVE rocks. If they’re not on rocks they’re on trees, but they prefer rocks more. They only go underground to hide, sleep or thermoregulate when it gets too hot out. Where have you been learning? Either you misread/misheard something or whatever information you’re getting is wrong.

Also, welcome to the forum!

Okay, not to invade or jump into anything in a rude manner, but, (as a median) I have a couple points to point out.
1. I agree with Thesuarus. Fence lizards ("Blue Bellies") love REAL rocks. You misunderstood that they don’t like HEAT rocks. Not real rocks. Heat rocks can harm the lizard.
2. Thesaurus wasn’t implying you were a "Noob", he was simply welcoming you to our forum. It’s just that he put it as an after message to a certain statement that, to you, could be taken offensive (in some matter, more or less). Thesaurus really meant to welcome you.

Yeah, just glad to help. Although I don’t think large accomidations need to be met to have these lizards inhabit her yard but, I could be very well mistaken. It really all depends on her financial situation and personal interests. But hey, it would be cool to have lizards in her yard. They sometimes may infringe with the territory of her cats, and most likely end up in her home, too. Kind of like an Eco-system in her backyard! (to some extent). So, really it’s what she wants to do.

Whoops, I took info from another post and carried it onto this one. I thought that she had cats when someone else said they had cats. My mistake!

Help with Fence lizards in my yard

I have been enjoying the lizards in my yard in the LA hills. About 5 of them in the front yard. I have watched them shed, mate, posture for mating. All I saw today were 2 males. Haven’t seen any digging. Maybe the females are watching over their eggs somewhere? I feed them a cpl meal worms at one end of my yard every 3 days. Fun to see them run the length of the yard for meal worms. My yard has rocks and old, low, woody azaleas. They seem to prefer rocks giving them a view, partially in the shade for hot days. I arrange the rocks then watch their preference. At times they challenge a female Linnet Sparrow for worms. Remarkably, several sleep in my folded car cover.Yesterday morning, I pulled into the driveway & one popped it’s head out of the car cover to see what was a foot. The bad part is when it rains at night, I leave the cover for them & my car has a leak. Lucky for me, it rarely rains. Good for you making a welcome spot for the lizards!
(no cats, cause of the coyotes)
