You really should reconsider your setup for them. Is that *REAL* dirt? Nononono. This won’t work in a vivarium for many, many reasons. You do realize that there ARE products made just for reptiles, right? I recommend going to whatever pet shop has reptile supplies and getting a brick of Eco-Earth. I also notice you have a heat rock. This is also bad; you can severely burn your lizards like that. Thing is, they don’t know when to get off because they can’t feel themselves getting too hot; they don’t have the right nerves in their belly.

You really, really should have done your research on fencies before bringing them in. In fact, go and do it right now. Go look at every single care sheet you can find; we have some right here, so that can help. First, pin down some basic lizard needs. All diurnal lizards need UVB, lots of space, heat, and cleanliness. With that in mind, you need to find out what kind of UVB, how much space, what temperatures, etc. specifically, for this lizard. Then go and learn all the fence lizard’s other requirements.

How on earth did you get so many? I had a friend who had two and the larger one killed the smaller, and these were just baby fencies.

Most likely not research enough. Did you pay attention to what I said? Lose the soil and get some Eco-Earth, and you do not need an infrared heat bulb. Like I said, that is for nocturnal lizards only. Get a day bulb. Under-tank heat mats made specially for reptiles are OK.

Now, in all this, I REALLY don’t suggest you jump at the hobby with a bunch of lizards. If you feel you are able enough to do it, alright, but that means you have to research TWICE as hard as usual. When you are done setting up the new tank, please take a picture and post it here so I can have a look at it.

i have been into reptiles since i got my first lizard when i was six year a water dragon and then i got a ball python which died because it had a bad respratory infection when we got him and then i have been catching garter snakes, bull frogs, and fence lizards just because i didnt get the right bedding dosen’t mean i dont know about reptiles. i do have a day bulb i told you and i reseached about them more and found out that they are not nocternal animals and the only reason i had a infer red is because i had a ball python.

Well alright then. Didn’t know you had a ball. But just remember not to use actual soil in a terrarium, okay? It can make them sick.

i am using fish rocks. is it normal to have fence lizards shake their tail when they are hunting the crickets i give them and how much longer do you think until i can breed my lizards?

No, I didn’t say fish rocks, I said reptile substrate. Go to Petco and get Eco-earth. Just some gravel in his tank, and he will get too cold or too hot.

As for breeding, I’d say not for a VERY long time. Not that it will take that long for them to grow, just that I don’t think you are going to be capable to breed them. Trust me. If by any chance you think keeping these 3 lizards is the slightest bit hard, you might as well give up on any ideas of breeding. But if you want to, now is a perfect time--to prepare.

Depending on how many females you have, after the male has mated with them you’re going to want to put the females in separate tanks larger than 10 gallons. The reason they need to be larger than 10 gallons is to provide a nesting space. Gravid females need LOTS of space and ZERO stress. So you’re going to need to buy a lot of stuff to ensure a stress-free environment, as well as provide for them a nesting spot. After that, you need to get a reptile incubator. But I REALLY don’t think you can do all that (No offense) because getting a female egg-bound is very easy. Egg-binding is a condition where a reptile or bird cannot lay eggs, and it is usually fatal. And in the case of small lizards such as this, it usually is.

I’m really, to be honest, concerned about this whole pet thing you have here. Even if they did not mate with the male, they will lay unfertilized eggs and can still get egg-bound. So you’re going to need and get them a bigger tank anyway. I’m going to suggest, since you have females, a 30-40 gallon tank to put them all in. And make sure there’s Eco-Earth in it.

I found my fence lizards in a rock pile so i am pretty sure that it wont hurt them to be back in rocks and when i get more research, experience with fence lizard, and i get the money for eco earth and an incubator then I’ll see if they will even breed i keep them all in the same 20 gallon. So if they have mated they’ve mated nothin i can do about it right?

Okay. But a brick of Eco-earth will only be about 5 dollars. And a small brick holds a LOT of substrate. If you still don’t want to get it, use paper towels. But to be honest, if you don’t have the money, you really shouldn’t be keeping 3 lizards. The reptile hobby is NOT a cheap one.

Umm...right. But what I’m trying to say is, that even if they did NOT mate, females will STILL lay eggs, just like chickens. Now I told you again, your tank is going to be MUCH bigger than that if you want 2 female fencies. What kind of 20 gallon is it? Is it a 20 long? a 20 long might do, actually.

Oh yes, very. I’ve been noticing it a lot, especially with my babies. RedGator or Jared T may be able to clarify on the behavior, though. I’m not sure if it’s out of frustration or excitement.

usally about 5-8 years but if kept in the most perfect right way they could live to be 10-15

Is there any easy way to clean the lizard tank without replacing the substrate every time? Lizard pooper scoopers? Something? I like to keep the tank clean, but emptying it once a week is a lot of work.

paper towels or Eco earth so you can spot clean.
