 Scratching

I have noticed that my fence has been scratching like a dog the last couple weeks with his back claws. What could this mean? Or maybe nothing?

He probably wants to get out. That’s just a simple guess so I don’t know for sure. That’s what my dog does when she wants to go out into the front yard, or take walks.

He’s itching, naturally. Lizards usually don’t itch at all, though. Check for ticks and mites on him, get some of this (Link) and use it on him. My fence lizard did that once and sure enough there were some tiny red mites.

The environment is pretty controlled so I didn’t expect mites or ticks. However, I will purchase and use, if nothing else, for precautionary measures. I appreciate the feedback. I hadn’t ever noticed scratching over the last 6 months so I didn’t know if it could be getting ready to shed or something else. Thanks for the replies :)

You are right. There were little red mites. Just wondering how they got in. The environment is pretty controlled. I can only think it came from the reptibark or ecoearth.

Yep. Now that you found mites, there’s a high chance they’re going to be resting in the rest of your lizard’s furniture as well so be sure to clean it.

Mites seem to be gone. I boiled the new substrate and all furniture. I also cleaned the cage thoroughly. My fence just shed again too. That may have helped. He seems to be moving a lot better and ate today as well. Fingers crossed that we are good for now.

I thought that my fence lizard’s mites were gone when I couldn’t see anymore. It turned out I was wrong and I think he got internal parasites. If you see anymore strange behavior, call a vet. Trust me you don’t want your lizard to end up like mine.

Nothing in the environment changed. The only thing different was that I introduced wax worms a couple weeks back. Not sure if they can come from them or not. I’d Love to hear some theories.

It has been a week and no sign of returning mites. Phew!
