Gravid Eastern Fence Lizard?! Please Help!!
A few weeks ago I caught an Eastern Fence Lizard and I instantly fell in love! I named her Ivy Ann and I have her in a 10x20 tank with sticks to climb on and a fake moss type stuff I got from the pet store on the bottom. I would like to thank everyone on this website because I have found out everything I need to know on here! Lol. But, I still have some questions. I am pretty sure she is gravid, but I am not exactly sure. She is large and she has bumbs on her sides and tummy, so I am pretty certain. If she is, what do I need to do with the eggs? Do I need to seperate them when they hatch? Is an incubator really necessary? What will the babies eat? Do they need to stay in the tank with their mom? Ahhh! I’m so lost! Pleaseee help me! Thanks :)

All the time I tell people to do their research before they even think of catching/buying something. But I’ll try and fix some of the stuff you got in here. But it’s really, really, REALLY important that you learn things beforehand, otherwise you’ll have no idea what you’re getting into. - Take the sticks out and bake them. They’re from outside and you’ve brought in bacteria/viruses from there. The reason it’s fine outside is because their numbers are kept in check by the elements. Inside a contained environment, they’re allowed to breed and take control. Wrap anything you got outside in aluminum foil and bake at 300 degrees for 15 minutes. - Moss? No no no. Moss is for frogs, chameleons, and other animals that need moist, tropical/boggy environments. Go back to the pet store and get some Eco-Earth. Fence lizards are burrowing animals and not only need a place to sleep under, but she needs a place to lay her eggs. - I’d say she’s gravid. Trust me, raising babies is no cakewalk. If you mess up on something, they’ll die. You’re also not sure if they’re fertile or not. If they are, and you want baby lizards, get an incubator. The babies will be fed on pinheads. DO NOT KEEP THEM IN THE SAME TANK WITH THEIR MOTHER. These are lizards, not birds. - Speaking of pinheads, what are you feeding her? She needs lots of food during this time, as well as a vitamin powder to supplement the crickets. Do you have one of those? - I also see no mention of UVB. She *needs* this. All diurnal lizards *need* this. Without it, they’ll develop Metabolic Bone Disease, which is fatal. If she does not have a proper UVB bulb or tube then you must hurry and get her one. - She’s restless because she’s frantically looking for a spot to nest. Fill your tank with Eco-Earth, and then work on making a lay box. |

Well I got the "moss" because that is what the pet store employee suggested for me, but I found some Eco-Earth so that problem is fixed. What is a lay box? I feed her four or five crickets a day and I keep them in a container with a slice of potato. What is the vitamin powder? And pinheads, do you have to breed them or can they be found at a petstore? I asked the lady at the pet store about a UVB but she said having the tank near a window would be fine, so I have the tank on my dresser right beside the window. But I guess I will go get her one now. |

Vitamin powder can be found in pet stores. You can get pinhead crickets sometimes from pet stores but not all. Yes, you could also breed them. Get the tank away from the window! The glass on the tank can magnify the sun and make it way to hot in her cage. Also, windows filter out most of the UV rays. So I hope you have learned not to believe people at pet stores. Just so you know I am not saying this is a rude way, I just would like Ivy Ann to have a happy life |

UVB is incapable of passing through glass. Considering she’s giving you reptile advice she should have known this beforehand. The vitamin powder I use is called Miner-All. While some powders only supply calcium, this powder adds a lot more vitamins and minerals to a cricket. |

A lay box is fairly easy to make. Get a small Rubbermaid container and make holes on the side and the top. I use an ice pick to make them. Then get some moist Eco-Earth or vermiculite and spread it throughout the lay box. Then cut a large opening for her to climb in and out of. It should look something like this:
You probably don’t need as many holes on the top as the picture but you can if you want to. Good luck! |

For bedding I use 2 inches of walnut shell lizard bedding covered in about an inch of what looks like beauty bark about the size of dimes; on top of that I put moistened REAL moss from the pet store. She can easily burrow in it and the bark on top keeps her from accidentally ingesting the sand-like shells when she eats. I feed her a mixture of wax worms, mealworms and large crickets; the worms should be offered in a dish that they cannot escape from, or you will have worms breading in your tank. They get dusted with a full vitamin supplement. Gravid lizards need a variety to keep their nutrients up. I tried to give her lay boxes but she was not the least bit interested in them; however her sand-like bedding with bark on it is wonderful for laying in and the moss makes it nice and moist. The eggs will need a moister environment than the lizard will need, so it is important to remove them right away. Once removed they must NOT be turned or disturbed until they hatch. Turning the eggs will suffocate the embryos, it they are fertile. It is not unusual for lizards to lay eggs that are not fertilized. You can make your own incubator but it is a lot of work to keep an eye on temperatures and humidity levels just right, so you might want to buy one. Mine is ‘The Reptibator’ by ZooMed, and you can order them online. |
