 New fence lizard!!!!!!

I caught a fence lizard today! I might keep it! It looks like a female to me, she is about 6 inches nose to tail. How do you tell how old they are? I am thinking about naming her Roxy. Let me know if you have any other name suggestions!

One question, she seems really fat so I was wondering if it might be gravid or pregnant?
I made a lay box just incase.

Here are some pictures of her and her cage:

Her lay box is lightly misted eco-earth

Not sure how to tell, but it would be safe to say she’s about a year old or so.

Is that big light for UVB?

Oh, I forgot to say that I don’t have any extra UVB lights on hand so I ordered one off of Amazon. If she is gravid should I catch a male fence lizard and breed her? Thanks!

How do you tell if she is gravid? That would be so cool if she was! If she is can I use an incubator meant for chickens? We have one but it hasn’t been used yet. Thanks

Can I use paper towels or tile or something easy to clean? And I could have a dig box for her to bury herself in? I would like something that I can turn crickets lose in and watch her eat and I like something nice and easy to clean. I like to put a few crickets in, watch her eat and take out the uneaten ones. I have some better hides but my other lizard is hogging them right now But I am trying to sell that one. Thanks

Digging usually isn’t the first thing that comes to mind for crickets, usually they just hide under something. And it’s easy to clean, just clean up where she went on the spot.

Why would you sell your old lizard so you could keep a new one? I’m sure that keeping a fence lizard is fun and all, but I think he’d probably be happier in the wild. So why would you get rid of your old lizard, and stick a new one in a tiny little cage. I’m sure the other one was captive so just spoil him for now. If you want to keep that lizard just buy some more hides, or you can make them.

Well I am selling my other lizard for a few reasons, She eats like a pig, she buries herself if you ever come near it and I am only allowed to have two lizards. Yes she would probably be happier in the wild but.......... I guess I just really like fence lizards. They are like a dog to me Zipper (the one I had before) would sit on my shoulder all day! He went on vacations with us. Pretty much the only time he was in his cage was when we were eating or sleeping. He was my best friend.

I let my lizards run around a lot outside and don’t you think it would be nice not having to worry about predators or getting food? I don’t know how much they like it, I just guess I really want to keep her.

I’m sure there’s nothing wrong with using paper towels instead, but eco-earth looks nicer and considering fence lizards are burrowing lizards it might alleviate a lot of stress.

@Baja: Letting her other lizard run wild is not an option, as she’s kept him for so long that releasing would have bad repercussions.

Also, make sure it’s legal to sell him!

Thesaurus Rex which one are you referring to? I thought she just caught her fence lizard, so I was trying to say just let the fence lizard go if she just caught it. As long as she doesn’t really hold him then she could just let it go. I’m sure the lizard is not quite tamed yet.

@Lizardgirl4 Also I’m kind of confused why you would hold your lizard for that long wouldn’t that be stressful to him/her. Reptiles have only one emotion and that’s fear so keep that in mind.

The one she bought from a reptile expo some time back. She is not selling the lizard she just caught.

And Baja, I don’t think you have any place to say what emotions lizards have. But I do know for a fact that fear is NOT the only one they have. Fence lizard docility varies a lot and depends on the individual, but if it’s a calm, friendly fence lizard used to handling, you can really handle them for long periods of time as long as they get the UVB they need. In fact, handling for that long might make them even more used to you. ’All day’, though, might be a bit too much.

Well whenever I put him in his cage he would start glass dancing. So I would take him out and hold him. Please don’t be rude to Baja! I do think that reptiles can get stressed but Zipper was a people lizard. He never showed sings of stress. I mostly held him outside since it was summer when I had him. But now I do make sure not to hold mine all the time now. That might have been a little much, I just felt sorry for him when he started glass dancing. The problem is he would only eat out of somebody’s hand He was SPOILD!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wasn’t trying to be rude. I was just letting her know that she was holding her lizard a little too much. He probably loved the warmth of your hand though.

Oh and TR you are right about the emotions thing. I know that if a female hatched with a hot incubation temperature that they would act a little more feisty than the other ones. But, if it were a female at a low incubation temperature than they would be more tolerant to handling. I don’t know that this is true for fence lizards, but it’s just an observation.

Yeah I didn’t know the reptile emotion thing for a fact, but I thought I heard it a few years back when the crocodile hunter was around. I don’t know if I’ll be getting another fence lizard because the only place I can find them here is in a state park. I was just lucky the first time because he was in my backyard. I bought a garter snake 2 weeks ago, but I think I might still get another lizard. I’ve narrowed it down to four choices a crested gecko, leopard gecko, fence lizard, or a collared lizard.
