 Territorial Male Eastern Fencies

I just wanted to share a story with everyone about how territorial males can be.

First let me say that many many years ago I had a large terrarium with a few males and several females inside. The males would regularly court the females and everyone seemed to get along. Although the males would sometimes express dominance the other males would submiss.

Today I am outside at work and I notice a Male come down off an oak tree, and proceeded to make his way 40’ across the parking lot to an awaiting female. They both began courting instantly. The male was doing "push-ups" and the female flattened her body and hunched her back, and did the hop turns. They proceeded to court for a min then I noticed another male come from the bushes (this was his turf). The 2 males began to fight immediately. They were tangling up and flipping and rolling around. They did this for several minutes before one ran off into the bushes. The Male resumed courting the female immediately. This shocked me in that I would have presumed that they would be more likely to be territorial in a terrarium than the wild open. Perhaps the fact that all the males were introduced to the terrarium at the same time, kept them more docile.
