 I think Roxie is tamed!!!

So whenever I try to pet Roxie in her cage she would hiss at me......... So I decided to let her go =( So I took her outside and she just sat on my hand! So I put her on the ground and she would run a little bit, then I put my hand by her and she just sat there. I picked her up and petted her and she would run around me, not scared of me at all. How do you tell if she is stressed? Thanks

Roxie is just trying to defend herself when you pet her in her cage. She doesn’t know if you want to eat or kill her so she hisses at you to tell you i’ll bite or back off. She stays on your hand outside because she likes the body warmth you produce. Fence lizards aren’t like dogs they don’t like to be petted but you can hold her if you like just not too often. hissing and glass dancing would be a sign of stress, how big is her cage?

That is the reason I wanted to let her go, because she would hiss at me so i didn’t want her to be real scared of me. I have owned fencies before, so I know how to care for them. She is in a 10 gallon tank. She has not been glass dancing. Whenever I put my hand in her cage she will jump into it and sit there. Thanks

You can’t be that reckless, especially since you’ve had Roxie for quite some time now.

As Reptileruler said, she’s one of those fence lizards that don’t like human contact. Fence lizards usually don’t hiss at humans so she may be a hot female, which means don’t put a male in. She’s established that her tank is her territory and will defend that.

Fence lizards usually don’t like leaving their territory unless they absolutely have to. Whenever I need to take mine out of my room for whatever reason, he holds on tighter, his eyes widen up, and his tail flails (A sign of fear). Roxie probably didn’t like the idea of leaving your room either, so she’d think twice about running away and may have trusted that by riding you she could find her way back.

A similar behavior I’ve seen in snakes, where if you try to pick some individuals up in their cage they will be defensive, but once they’re taken out they become calm. I don’t know why that is, but that’s the way it is.

She is probably trying to defend her self because she thinks you are a predator.

Fence lizards are a little hard to tame. Maybe you should try starting out with something more like a leopard gecko, they can be tamed. But I tamed Roxie by just taking her outside and holding her. I didn’t want to hold her inside incase she got away.

If you don’t think you can buy a leopard gecko, you shouldn’t be having lizards at all.

You can get a leopard gecko for $20. So if you don’t have $20 then how are you going to pay for your fence lizards supplies.

You can just get a sterlite tub that is at least 20 inches long which costs about maybe $10. You can also make your own home made hides for them. You can do this by getting deli cups and just cutting an opening in them. You need three of these hides a warm hide a cool hide and a moist hide. Get a shallow container to put the water in. Then all you need is a substrate AKA bedding. The easiest, and cheapest way of doing this is just put paper towel in the bottom. The lizard, and the whole setup shouldn’t cost more than $50.
