 Eastern Fence Lizard Question

This is site has been a great help with my daughter and I in setting up the correct environment and food source for what we believe is a female Eastern Fence Lizard I caught a month ago in our garage. I thank all of you who post this information to help make sure that those of us that are new to keeping reptiles, especially ones caught in the wild, maintain the correct the habitat to reduce the stress on the animal along with giving it the best chance to survive in captivity.

Our lizard, "LIZ" has shed its skin once since we’ve had her and now its body is just over 2-1/2" long.
Looking at pictures on this site as well as other sites on the web, I’m pretty sure its a female. I have taken her to 2 of the big box pets stores, one said she’s an Eastern Fence Lizard, the other said she’s an Emerald Swift. She was so easy to catch, and in fact she acted like she wanted to be caught when I saw her in our garage. I thought it may be some exotic lizard that someone either let go, or it had escaped from its tank. Also, she did not have a tail, so I knew something must of been trying to catch and eat it. We have been living in our house for 10 years now and I have only seen a few skinks and some snakes around our yard. That’s why when I saw a lizard that looked like this one, I thought for sure that it must be a lizard not from this area. However, our backyard is all hardwood trees with a few pines, along with a lot of rotten trees that have fallen over the years, so after reading about the habitat for Fence lizards, I found out we really have the perfect place for them.

So, my question is; when do they develop the light blue patches under their throat and belly? Also, though I was told her tail wouldn’t grow back, it does appear that it is. Will it grow back?

Once I learn how to post a picture I will send one to get your opinions.

You are doing great caring for her! She is probably a eastern fence fence lizard. Yes, her tail should grow back.

 Eastern Fence Lizard Question

Whoever said she was an Emerald Swift was a raving mad idiot who doesn’t know what he/she is talking about. Emerald Swifts are from Central America. For that reason, you should never trust most pet stores.

You should be careful around lizards that willingly allow you to capture them -- there’s a chance they could be sick. Or, they’re simply cold or there is some other factor that leads to them not being afraid of you.

Female fence lizards usually do not develop much of a blue belly or throat, but when they do it’s usually by the time they become adult.

Again, don’t trust pet stores. Her tail *will* grow back, but whatever tail she had before, the new one is not going to be as magnificent as her old tail.

Have fun with her!

She appears to being doing well.

She also is more protective of her environment now and not really wanting to be handled much.

It is cool when her body gets all flexed-up to eat a cricket; she almost looks like a Velociraptor. She also looks up at you with a mean stare when she’s wanting some crickets. She does have quite a personality.

Will she try to lay eggs next spring, even though she won’t be around a male?

Thanks for the info.

She will try to lay eggs next spring. Please give her adequate space for her to lay eggs, and a proper place to nest.
