 Very hyper lizard

Hey it’s me again! I got sick last week and I had to stay downstairs and sleep on the sofa and stuff to stay cool. I was very sick and couldn’t walk so my dad went upstairs to feed my lizard and do the lights. He followed very detailed instructions and told me exactly what he was doing everyday. According to him he was feeding her 3 mediums a day or 2 medium and 2 small, mixes like that. He said she ate them all too and was pooping twice a day.

When I came up to see her I realized she was really fat. She was acting normal even though she was "fat" and my dad said he thinks she was just growing.

However, the past 2 days or so she has been acting very weird. She is very hyper and she is constantly running around and jumping on the glass. Right now she is jumping on the left side of the glass over and over and she does it for hours. On the same side she has also dug a big "trench" along the side. She has been digging lots of holes and running around like mad. Is she alright because it seems like something is wrong. She has not been eating, or I assume so because she has crickets in her cage. I’m not sure if she picks them off or not so I’m unsure if I should be giving her new ones.

So does she need anything I can get for her? I’m unsure what to do. I bought smaller crickets as well and tried to feed them but she acts like they are not there. I thought that maybe she is impacted but she has been pooping really little poops. Could that still be the case?

She may have eggs but I’m not sure really. I took a look at her today and she doesn’t look as "fat".

I came home today and she had a little stick in her eye! I think she got it from digging so much. I was able to sneak up and pull it out but she is keeping it shut. I didn’t notice it before so I don’t think it’s why she is acting hyper. I think her eye will heal though.

That’s egg behavior! Make sure she has plenty of room for eggs!

Oh is that so? What exactly will I need for her? will she lay them in the eco earth or do I need something special? I read that you said if they lay incorrectly it could be harmful for the lizard so now I am feeling a little nervous since this has been going on for awhile.. I hope it won’t be to late to help her!

How long until I should feed her again? She has crickets in her tank but I am unsure about adding new ones.

Should I remove things from her tank to give her room?

Will she fight me when I try to remove them? They will be infertile, correct? (I don’t very much like the idea of having to dispose of lizard babies)

How long until she will lay them? I have not seen any in her tank so far.

She will lay in most anything she can dig in, but try to make a nesting spot as appealing as possible. You can try to build a lay box for her to use.

My Female lizard has been acting like this as well! I just thought it was just her warming up to the terrarium and everything. But, now that you mention it, She really has been acting sort of strange. So, just in case, How would I go about making a "lay box". I currently have calcium sand in her terrarium so that she can easily burrow, but what substrate would I use for a "lay box"? Do I need anything else? Please Brief me Thesaurus. This is kind of a new thing for me.

Do not use calcium sand in her cage! If they lick the ground or something then they could get impaction. Eco-earth is a better choice. This has a picture of a lay box in it.

Hey guys- She has not laid her eggs yet and she is still digging. I saw the picture of a lay box and I think I will pick up the things for it and make one tonight, putting it where she digs a lot. I hope she will go into it though and not just dig around it.

I read in that forum that they put real moss from the petstore for their lizard. Is that a good idea? What kind of moss would I use? It sounds like it would be pretty!

The eye the little stick was in, well, she is still keeping it shut. It will heal on it’s own, right? I’m not sure what I could do for that.

Big question, should I keep offering her food? She ate one yesterday but I’m not sure if she is getting close to when she lays eggs. I hope that is the case anyway, that she does have eggs, and just is not stressed out..

If she still eats, keep feeding her. The eye might heal on its own. If you notice her laying a few eggs and stopping for some reason, find a herp vet immediately.

Okay, saw the pic, looked up eco-earth, and I think I can get everything. Hopefully she can hold out for another night. Luckily, I fed her yesterday, so I can hopefully get all the sand out (because I was worried about that) and replace it with this eco-earth stuff. So, just the coconut fiber type right? And just in case, let me tell you about her feeding schedule lately. I have been feeding her 2-3 large crickets every other day (calcium dusted). I don’t really know about "Gut loading" them because I usually just put a piece of lettuce or something in with the crickets so that they can eat whenever. I’m not too fond of the little things as you can tell. Oh, by the way, where would I find this vermiculite stuff?
I’ll tell everyone about how she is doing tommorow sometime, but please answer my inquiries ASAP!

Thanks,
Makusu

Yes, eco-earth is coconut fiber. I buy mine in the brick and follow the instructions (soaking it in water). When I put it in it’s nice and moist for her but be careful because the humidity will go up A LOT. Usually I keep her out of the cage for awhile and place her in a temp until it goes down a bit.

I feed mine everyday but dust every other day. I do about 3 mediums or a mix or medium and smalls but your lizard is probably larger than mine is.

Gut loading is just giving them a lot of healthy things to eat so your lizard will in turn get the most out of eating the crickets. I would suggest not to give them lettuce though, at least not the ice burg kind. I heard bad things about giving it to lizards who can eat greens mostly because it’s just water. I don’t know if that’s bad for crickets but I had a bad experience with ice burg so I tend to stay away from that. I give them oranges, oatmeal, and cricket food by fluckers. I do the yellow water jellys and the brown food flakes. I also give them water in a paper towel and change it all everyday so it doesn’t mold. Gut loading is probably going a step beyond that, but that’s what I do for my crickets.

I think you were asking Rex all this stuff but I figured I could answer too (kinda). I don’t know where to get the vermiculite so I’m rolling with the eco-earth option. I’m making her lay box right now but she still doesn’t want to eat. I’m assuming that’s normal! Not sure how long it will be until she lays though.

She went into her lay box today (To my surprise) but she just curled up and slept. I cut a hole in the top and at the bottom and I’m glad that I did because I was worried I did not punch enough holes into the sides. She is still not eating and I have not been offering her new crickets as there are still some in her cage. She pooped yesterday (very tiny). I was wondering if not eating will be negative to her during this time and how long it will be until she lays.

Maybe you and mme could share info about our lizards because mine hasn’t been eating either. I really need to get her a lay box, but My Mom threw out all the old ziploc containers and lids, and upgraded to rubbermaid or whatever. All I know is, I CANNOT cut any hole, big or small, in my Mom’s precious rubbermaid containers. So, I’ll have to see what I can do. Try feeding her Mealworms. Not too many, but just enough. I got some mini meal worms yesterday (Wrong size for my lizard, way too small, by the way) and put them in her terrarium in a mealworm dish, and I noticed that they were gone when I turned off the lights. I’m going to try to get her larger mealworms on maybe tuesday, but I’m just trying to get her to eat something. She is still acting super crazy and running around everywhere, and I’m just nervous and I’m not sure what to do.
Help is very much wanted, and needed. Thanks!
Makusu

I did not have any containers to poke holes into either so I went to the store and got some for pretty cheap! Just be sure the plastic is really thin and the container is big enough. Mine is hanging out on the rocks under her basking ledge, I think this is how she stays warm since she doesn’t seem to want to climb to her ledge sometimes.. I will try to feed her again today. I tried to hand feed like I was doing but she always closes her eyes like she is stressed out so I leave her alone. She does that about every time I go and look at her so I am trying to leave her alone. I have been staying downstairs more often too, if she needs space. I will try the mealworms next time I go out! I lost my other lizard to them so I’m a little nervous. I think I can just get the smallest kind and it will be alright.. I plan on replacing her lay box with some more moist eco earth now too since I just got back in my room.

That sounds like egg binding, you’ll have to see a vet. I’m sorry.
