 Newbie With Two Babies

We rescued one western fence (blue belly) lizard yesterday morning. Bought a small critter hut and some basic things and planned to make him a pet.

He was pretty stressed and frozen-in-place yesterday. Today, he moved around and seemed to be a lot happier. I’m fairly certain it’s a male because of a photo I was able to get of his underside. He has thin blue lines on both sides of the belly and a large patch across the under chin.

TODAY, I just got home with teeny tiny crickets from the local reptile store, and we found another one! So I put him in with the first one. Bad idea???

The new one, I haven’t been able to look yet for colors. I am hoping that because they are both about the same size/age, that they can live together. If the second one is a male also, do I need to seperate them, and how soon?

I have pics but don’t know how to upload them here yet. Will work on that.

I forgot to say, they are both about 2-1/2" long including the tails.

Hi, welcome to the forum and the reptile hobby!

- What were your basic things?

- A good way to tell is if you see two enlarged scales near his vent.

- YES. VERY BAD IDEA. Lizards are solitary and another lizard will only stress him out more. Not only that, but the minimum size is 10 gallons per fence lizard, and you probably did not change the tank. Separate them immediately.

A common mistake most people make is the misconception that lizards are cheap ’free pets’. They are, however, anything but and if you want a reptile of any kind, you need to be prepared to spend a lot of money for supplies.

Thank You ThesaurusRex for the reply.

Took the advice to seperate the two. Going to give the other one to my 21yr old daughter.
As for the set up, I got a 10g glass tank with a stainless screen top. A 50w day heat lamp and a 50w black night heat lamp (Zilla). I’m using paper towels right now until he gets a smidge bigger. The tank seems ginormous for this tiny guy. It’s like the invisible lizard! Oh well, I can watch the few teeny crickets.

If you click my name profile, you can click to see my images. If I knew how to add them into the post I would.

Hi there! That’s a nice habitat and nice lizards! You just need a UVB light, that is very important!

To post a picture:
Below the message box where there is Spell checker, Link maker and those things, click "Get your photo list" . Then click "Make code for this image" Then "Click here to place the code on your post".

These are awesome little pets! Have fun!

Hi Lizard girl 4. Thanks! I got a decorative background today and I enjoy viewing SO much better now! I know he’s a desert sort of lizard, but *I* like all the plant matter. :)

A UVB light is next on my list. I’ve got one bookmarked online to order.

He’s eating well and is getting pretty comfortable. He’s been out and about for a good deal of the day today. Let’s see if I can post today’s photo here in the post.
