Please Don’t Please dont keep fence lizards you have caught if you dont know anything about them or reptile husbandry. They are one of the last commonly seen species and I’d like to see it stay that way, there’s just way too many posts about people who have caught fence lizards and dont know a thing about them, their habits, habitat etc, even now they can be seen on warmer days and as the weather gradually gets warmer more fence lizards will be caught and brought home and more stupid posts will be made by people that are more than likely just going to end up killing them, if you must bring one home keep it for a week and let them go EXACTLY where you caught it

Please Don’t i agree with your post except for the last part.. bring them home for a week and release them where you caught them!? wouldn’t that stress the lizard out to no end!?!! i kind of think it will.. but, you’re right.. my first experience with these wonderful creatures had one pass away.. BUT I learned from it and took care of multiple amounts and never lost another.. Came mighty close, BUT he didn’t die.. No vet was seen or anything.. It was kind of a weird situation i would suppose.. I babied him for weeks and he survived.. So much of baby’ing that I took him everywhere I went.. Yeah I kind of figured it would stress him to no end but he actually liked it.. I had him tamed very very well and as of now he is independant in Louisana.. I hope he is still alive seeing as that state isn’t really ’BIG’ on eastern fence lizards but they do have some in certain areas..

Quote: if you must bring one home keep it for a week and let them go EXACTLY where you caught it
meaning i dont condone it but if you do release after a week, at least it will be back where it belongs instead of being improperly cared for and dying, which is even more stressful to the lizard and the "keeper"

Please Don’t You know as far as I am concerned the capture of fence lizards isnt that bad. There are TONS of these suckers in central oregon and there is GREAT information on the internet on how to take care of them. I’m not trying to lecture but these days there’s tons of ways to find out how to care for reptiles. You cant tell me that you always knew how to take care of your lizards.

Please Don’t As much as I think Blue Bellies are a good starter lizard, it’s better to acquire the knowledge onlines or from books rather than taking a test-run with a poor fencelizard.

Please Don’t Take a look on these this forum, the majority of posts are from people who just caught one and brought it home now going "what do I do with this lizard" as for the abundance of fence lizards in central oregon, they are the most commonly seen lizard in California as well, but i’ll tell you that their habitat is shrinking i have witnessed it first hand from from urban developments, there have been several locations where i could find a large variety of herps and now their are none, not even the common western fence lizard

Please Don’t yeah, true........didnt mean to be rude because I kind of notice it’s mostly younger kids that dont get on the ball and just think "oh it’ll survive in this cage if I give it dirt, grass, water. Yeah there are tons upon tons around central oregon on BLM land. some of them look 10-11 inches long which i find kind of wierd because they shouldnt even get that big should they?. They freak you out when you’re hunting because the big ones like to run around you and make alot of noise...k well I’m done sorry about being off topic a lil bit in this ramble

Please Don’t my lil fence lizards are right back where I had them...I had them for about a week, I brought her out to bask in the sun the other day and she ran all the way across to the neighbors yard. Which gave me the Idea she needed alot more space then I could give her rightnow. So to everyone thats just catching them and throwing them in a little tank they arent liein about how they want to be in a BIG area. Don’t be mean and keep them in a little cage/aquarium it made me sad to have to catch her to put her back in till I could bring her back to the spot I caught her originally

Please Don’t I semi agree wiht htis topic accept one tihng. If you really want to get into reptile husbandry and want to start with a wild fence lizzard, then keep one and research what to feed and buy the lizzards to keep them healthy. if you cant afford to get hte proper things htne dont keep them.

Please Don’t my neighbor caught a fence lizard in really bad conditions. it was so skinny that its eyes were starting to fade and its bones were clearly showing. She gave it to me and I already had a new habitat set up so I put my soon to be Calm and tame lizard in there where I nursed Her back to Health. now she sits on my hand every day and is really fat and healthy. not really as in unhealthy though.

Please Don’t I think the same could be said of any pet. Don’t buy a pet without first looking into how to care for it. That goes for any animal, whether it be a wild-caught lizard or a german shepherd.
As for the ethics involved in catching wild lizards, a good deal of reptile species that people buy in pet stores are wild-caught and transported because some species just don’t breed readily in captivity. As far as I see it, a responsible owner with a wild-caught fence lizard isn’t much different from a responsible owner with a wild-caught chameleon they bought from a pet store.

Hey I know this has nothing to do with what you guys are talking about. But how big do Western fence lizards get? (like in inches or something). How long do they live for?

Please Don’t Westerns get about 3 1/2 to 4 inches long. But I agree, no one should take them home if they don’t know much about them. They are beautifull lizards and I know them to be quite tame, but they deserve to live out their lives in the wild and should never be kept in captivity unless you know exactly what you’re doing and are prepared to take care of them no matter what.

i have a bluebelly that was about 2 inches when i caught here, and she is perfectly fine and healthy and we love each other lots. not all people are bad at caring for lizards from the wild.

Please Don’t NICE TOPIC, UNFORTUNATLY I USED TO KEEP MY BLUEBELLIES IN A SCREENED CAGE OUTSIDE WHEN I WAS A KID, SOMETIMES WITH BIG GOPHERSNAKES, CAL. KINGSNAKES, STRIPED RACERS, WESTERN COACHWHIPS RINGNECK SNAKES, GILBERT SKINKS W. ALLIGATOR LIZARDS, ETC. THE MORTALITY RATE WAS HUGE !!!! THAT WAS BACK IN THE 60’S--70’S WHEN WE KEPT EVERY FISH WE CAUGHT, USED BUG SPRAY TOO MUCH AND LET GO SICK REPTILES AROUND OUR SAME HOUSE WITH A TOUGH SIMEASE CAT THAT LOVED TO KILL ANYTHING FROM LIZARDS TO RABBITS THEN LEAVE THE CARCASS ON OUR DOORSTEP. I CAN’T TELL YOU HOW BAD IT FELT TO EXPERENCE THAT. NOW I TRY TO HELP PROTECT SNAKES, SWIFTS, ETC....NOW IM HAPPY TO PROVIDE A SMALL HABITAT, APPROX. 450 SQ. FT. YARD WITH MANY SUNNING AREAS AND HIDING PLACES FROM THE NEIGBORHOOD CATS. MY LIZARD FRIENDS HAVE GIVEN ME ANOTHER CHANCE AND NOW THEY DON’T RUN AWAY FROM ME, THEY EAT FLIES OFF MY FINGER, I DON’T USE BUG SPRAY AND CHASE CATS AWAY BY THROWING BALLED UP TEE SHIRTS AT EM WHEN I FIND THEM IN MY YARD. (I STILL LIKE CATS BUT NOT IN MY YARD.) SO FAR IVE SEEN 2 SETS OF BABY SWIFTS, AND 1 SET OF BABY ALLIGATOR LIZARDS. ALSO DURING MATING TIMES SEE ADULTS THAT COME BACK AND VISIT FOR A FEW DAYS. THERE SEEMS TO BE THE RESIDENT POPULATION OF 2-3 THEN THE VISITORS WHICH USED TO BE THE RESIDENTS A YEAR OR TWO AGO. I BELIVE THAT MAKING A BETTER HABITAT FOR THE ONES YOU FIND IN YOUR YARD IS MUCH MORE REWARDING THAN CATCHING A WILD ONE THEN CAGING IT !!! I DO BELIVE THAT KEEPING CAPTIVITY BRED REPTILES IS O.K. ALSO IF YOU FIND AN AREA OF NEW HOUSE CONSTRUCTION OR DEVELOPMENT ITS O. K. TO KEEP A FEW STRESSED ONES FOR PETS, AND/ OR RELEASE THEM IN A BETTER IN A BETTER HABITAT. I LIVE IN A OVER DEVELOPED AREA WITH WAY TOO MANY CATS AND NO NATURAL UNDISTUREB HABITAT. MY LIZARDS ARE DOING QUITE WELL, AND IM STILL OPEN TO ANY AND ALL SUGGESTIONS TO IMPROVE ON THEIR HOME, SO PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE MORE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ME, SUCH AS OCCASIONAL FEEDING, SOWBUGS ? BLACKWIDOWS ?, MEALWORMS ?. CAT REPELLANT ? SHOULD I VITAMIN DUST WILD ONES OR NOT? THANKS TO EVERYBODY FOR PARTICIPATING IN THESE FORUMS. ILL POST PHOTO SOON (IM REALLY IMPRESSED BY THE OLD MALE THAT HANGS AROUND AND HAS 2 TAILS !!!!)
