Pelee Island trip July 17 & 18, 2007 I just wanted to share some pics from my latest trip to Pelee Island a couple of weeks ago. We went July 17 & 18 and the trip was a success since we saw somewhere around 100 snakes and the black flies were not out in force as they sometimes are. We could have seen more except the weather didn’t cooperate and it rained from about 12-6PM nonstop on the 17th so that day was pretty much a waste. We tried to make up for it by putting on the headlamps and night herping but saw nothing except a single toad. The only negatives are that I still have not seen a Blue Racer and there was a recent article in the Windsor Star discussing a proposal to turn about 1/4 of the island into a golf course and 3,000 residences, which I hope never happens because that will be the end of these trips for me. But nonetheless here it goes:
Dekay’s Brown Snake

Next up are some of the different color variations of the Eastern Garter Snakes we saw

As we were walking along the road this ball of Lake Erie Watersnakes along with an Eastern Garter was just a couple of feet away and managed to get one not so great picture before it broke up.

Huge Fox Snake, Lake Erie Water Snake, & Eastern Garter Snake (That is a fully grown adult watersnake for a comparison of the Fox Snake’s head size)
.jpg)
Same Fox Snake, it had a lump right near the end of what was left of it’s tail which I can only assume is some type of transmitter for research.
.jpg)
Another Fox Snake, this one was shedding.
.jpg)
And lastly, some of the different color variations of Lake Erie Watersnake’s we saw. Starts with small ones and the last few are adults.

Pelee Island trip July 17 & 18, 2007 Pelee Island is in Lake Erie, Southern Ontario. It’s basically out in the lake between Leamington/Kingsville and Ohio..the link below should explain it better than I can. Great place to find herps, although I was given some information this year by somebody who was also out there looking for snakes that you should be aware of (should have gotten his name he said he has written several articles on Pelee Island herps). I can’t say for a fact that what he said is true but he told me that if the MNR sees you holding or even pursuing a Lake Erie Water Snake, Blue Racer, Fox Snake, or other endangered species to get a picture you will get a hefty fine. He said that in one of his articles there was a picture of a Blue Racer in his hand and that they were trying to fine him until somebody with influence in his organization got them to calm down.

Pelee Island trip July 17 & 18, 2007 LOOKS LIKE YOU HAD A BLAST .I WOULD LOVE TO VISIT THAT AREA.
IT`S PROBABLY GOOD THEY ARE THAT STRICT AND FINE-HAPPY . THAT`S WHY YOU SAW SO MANY. NOBODY WOULD DARE TO CATCH THEM. THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE THAT DOWN HERE IN THE EVERGLADES . PEOPLE HERE STILL COME AND COLLECT . THAT`S WHY ON OUR BEST DAY WE SAW MAYBE 15 SNAKES , BUT USUALLY SEE ABOUT 4 OR 5 ,

Pelee Island trip July 17 & 18, 2007 I agree that the protection is a good thing, we have the same problem in the Houston area. I can go to certain places and see 100 alligators in a couple of hours but there is no way that I can see that many snakes in a weeks time. Undoubtedly that is because of the protection the alligators have had for years to prevent people from harming them or keeping one as a pet whereas most snakes that enter somebody’s yard end up getting killed.

Pelee Island trip July 17 & 18, 2007 Wow, those are some nice water snakes! Looks like you saw almost everything that island has to offer, except racers. I’d be surprised if you found one on your own, it took almost 15 of us to find them, remember Josh?

Pelee Island trip July 17 & 18, 2007 Yeah, the guy I talked to there said he had been on the island for over two weeks and had only come across two racers. One was crossing the road while he was on his bike riding by and the other was in a patch of poison ivy. The one thing that surprised me this year was that probably about 20% of the snakes we saw were missing the end of their tails so something has to be biting them off don’t know whether it’s birds, turtles, or what.

Pelee Island trip July 17 & 18, 2007 Just figured i’d post this up for other herpers who visit the island I was bored and reading around and came across this article about Nature Conservancy Canada trying to purchase a nice sized chunk to add to Lighthouse Preserve, it would be a nice sized area for herping in the future if the funding goes through. I’m going to donate what I can later this week. Link to article is below.
