Accidental Herping I went to this pond here in VA to get some baby sunfish and minnows because the day before we came and there were thousands of them around these 2 logs. Right before we were about to leave I started walking to one of the logs. When I get closer I see a big snake. It was poised in strike position on the log. I need to get past (and I’m known to do stupid stuff) so I picked up a stick to move him. Low and behold he strikes at the stick then falls in the water. I stood as still as possible to try to see him so I didnt get bit or something cause I dont know what type it was then or now. I see him swimming towards me so I make a run for it over the log and away from that spot.
He was banded with dark colors. I think he was either a cotton mouth or a water snake. Does anybody have any pics of snakes matching this description? Also he was about quarter thick and maybe 3 feet long. I looked at some pics of cotton mouths and water snakes but they werent all that great from google.
Any help is appreciated and I would love to hear your comments about my story.
Please and Thank You,
Alex

Accidental Herping Sounds like a banded water snake, they have been known to chase humans and are very aggressive. If it was a cottonmouth, you would see a pure white mouth with fangs, but you did the right thing not touching it
