You do realize that many states outlaw the collection and sale of native species, right? California is one of them. In California, people who sell native species tend to get caught by Fish and Game rather quickly. The damage is almost always reversible.

Well yea people get caught doing it, but i’m sure more people get away with it than the people getting caught for all the states illegal or not. There is more that can be done about it than just counting on the state authorities. Damage done isn’t almost always reversible, people who are actually caught collecting have probably collected before and made sales. By that time it’s to late then, especially and most times with state Endangered/Threatened species.

I’m just going by California law and what I’ve learned from talking with California DFG officers. The officers around here watch everything like a hawk. Its rather intimidating. I live right between the deserts and the wetlands. Tons of protected birds on one side, quite a few protected reptiles on the other side. I see the officers and field biologists all the time.

How do you know this?! Its because people got caught. Maybe not as fast as they should have been due to the fact that some country’s and states are rather liberal on laws. If animals are getting mass collected and sold, I don’t believe it is always a herpers fault. I believe the state needs to take some responsibility and stop the importation and exportation of certain species. Just look at what has happened to Florida because of all the animals they allowed in and all the animals they allow to be taken out. Its basically destroyed.

If we have stronger laws then we get a stronger response and more public awareness.

I’m not saying, flaunt you herping locations. I’m just saying you shouldn’t be so paranoid.

your right and wrong
it`s not being paranoid . there just isn`t enough wild life officers to keep watch on illegal poaching
so we need to do our part. don`t help people along . don`t give out locations where reptiles are thriving . the temptations too great .
i live in miami fla . it`s true there are virtually no snaes in any rural areas anymore except for the ocassinal black racer , or water snakes
we found a location where we see sometimes 20-30 snakes a night , on a road .
we`ve seen every and corn snakes , moccasins , gloss sakes, even burms up to 15 feet
we stop , take pics and get them off the road .
we wouldn`t tell a sole . even the snake shop owners down here go out and still poach .it`s a shame
if you tell one person they tell someone and so on , and so on .
it`s like the saying about when you have sex with someone , your having sex with a hundred . you just don`t know their past connections.

Your right the states need to take some more responsibility for it. But the vast majority of countries and states arn’t watched over by Wildlife Officials like they do in California and California does not speak for the other states... So why make a post telling people not to be so paranoid about it if maybe only a few states are a lot more strict about it? Not everyone lives in California.

I’ve seen multiple sup species of fire salamanders that are illegal to collect sold on kingsnake.com’s classifieds


almost all amphibians that are sold in bulk are Wild caught

now, I know a lot are also bred

and I do agree, steps should be made to prevent illegal collection, before they are collected

THIS IS A GOOD THREAD. It’S NOT EVEN JUST BIG COLLECTERS YOU’VE GOT TO WORRY ABOUT. ONE GREEDY NERD WITH TOO MANY EMPTY TANKS IN HIS BASEMENT CAN MAKE A LOT OF ANIMALS LIVES VERY MISERABLE. this should be drilled in peoples head .
you know , my son and i have gone night herping about twice a week for the past 2 months .
the same road we saw 20 to 30 snakes on ? we see maybe 3-5 this year .
we`re wondering if it`s from poaching , or just decline in the animals. it`s just a shame how fast animals die off , be it from collectors , road-kill , or in the everglades the competition from the non-natives we do see there more than the natives
all at the hands of man
