 Early Spring in PA

Here are some pics from Camp Hill and Perry County PA. They are from anywhere between 3/1/09 and 3/20/09. There is a red earded slider which was cool to find because they aeren’t native to PA. There is a lead back salamander a red back salamander and a northern two lined salamander. there is also a wood frog and a eastern red spotted newt.

I ended up keeping the young male red earded slider, although i will probobaly release him once it warms up alittle more as there was frost this morning and it got up to 60 degrees in the day.

they were descent finds for such early in the year.

 Early Spring in PA

I was helping friends put in a bed for herbs in their tiny backyard in Berkeley Ca last weekend, and we found two very fat, very large salamanders. Biggest I’ve ever seen. One was about 4 1/2 inches long about 2 cm wide in the belly, the other about 2/3 its size. We moved them to another damp spot as we did the gardening ( all of us would have been crushed if it had been hit by the shovel as we dug) Their 8 year old son after helping us pull weeds asked permission to use some old broken bricks to make a Salamander habitat at the base of the pinapple sage we found them under.

Very cool family, and great kid to think of that. Future field herper in the making there.
