 Is this possible

would i be able to have a small saltwater setup something like a 20 gallon tank or maybe a tall hexagon style. i have had a large salt water tank before and it was just to much to handle would a smaller one be easier or is it the same amount or work no matter what size?

For me, the way it goes is there is a lot more that could happen a lot faster in a 20 gallon tank, than a 55 gallon tank. The idea is that if you get a spike of ammonia in a 20 gallon tank, than you have to catch it as it’s spiking. But if you get a spike in a 55 gallon tank than you don’t have to catch it right as it’s spiking since it’s a bigger tank and it will take longer to effect the whole tank.

The whole idea if a saltwater tank is the bigger the tank, the easier it is. The minimum I would go is a 55 gallon. UNLESS you want a fish by itself, like a seahorse, or a pufferfish or something along those lines.

Well, that’s all contingent on the crustacean, the reason seahorses need to be by themselves is because they are very slow eaters. If you put them in there with fish who are fast swimmers than there is a big chance that the seahorses aren’t going to be able to get the food they need to live. That’s why people say that it is better for seahorses to be by themselves. What sort of crustacean do you want to put in?

I started with a 29 gallon reef and that thing was bullet proof. Bigger is better but if you can’t afford it than do a nano tank. I know of people who have dropped from 90, 75 and 55 to a tank as small as a 10g. It’s all what you make of it. If you plan on ignoring it for weeks at a time then it’s not a good idea to go with a small tank but as long as you keep up on weekly water changes then you’ll be fine.

I never had seahorses so I can’t comment on them, but you could keep some pretty cool little fish like clowns, gobies or any shrimp in a small set up.

Some say the bigger the better, well that all depends on how much devotion that you have for the hobby.

My old 12 gallon nanocube.

My old 29 gallon

A 30 gallon tank that I sitted for a couple summers ago.

Small tanks are possible but just make sure that you’re ready for the commitment.

The only other fish you can keep with a sea horse is a pipefish.
