 Long lived beginner fish?

Does anyone know of a type (or types =) of easy to care for fish that live a long time? I really like some of the smaller catfish species, but I’ve been researching more on comet goldfish. I like the goldfish very much, but I’m a bit concerned about their waste production and eventual size! Color/flashiness isn’t a prob, if anyone could help it would be appreciated!

if taken care of correctly Betta fish live about 3yrs and they are fairly easy to care for, you can have several females in a tank together or a single male with other not so flashy fish (although some bettas dont do so well like this) other wise a pleco will live a long time but they are less active and some types get huge...

Im not too keen on goldfish, but iam on tropical fish. Most Cichlids live for ten to fifteen years plus. What size tank are you getting?

the fish you can have depends greatly on the size of your tank. I love cichlids, however most get to big fish.

True most get to be pretty big, some get outright HUGE(like the Peacock bass cichlid). There are also alot of Cichlids that dont get big at all like dwarf cichlids ( Rams,Apistoramma’s,Krib’s,etc). Most cichlids are very hardy and long lived, most are aggressive and some are downright terrors of the tank. Cichlids are also very intelligent fish. Just if you get any do plenty of research.

As a college student who’s always loved animals but doesn’t have alot of space, I have always loved Bettas. They are very easy to care for and do not require fancy filters. As for waste production they are much cleaner than goldfish. All they need is a little space, a plant or two, and an object they can hide in. Feed them right and they can live for quite a while. The longest living Betta I had was Data and he lived for seven years! My second oldest was one my roommate left behind and he was already three. Bill lived two more years after that. I’m not really sure how long Betta can live but I have kept them since I was little and have always enjoyed their company. Hope this helps!
