GOLDFISH Goldfish go with Goldfish. I wouldn’t mix different types of fish; the neons are tropical community fish. Tropical fish like warmer water than the Goldfish do; goldfish like cold water. The size difference is also a concern. There are two categories of goldfish normally sold in pet stores: "fancy" and comet. Comets are the fish normally sold as feeder fish in pet stores. They are also normally won as prizes at fairs. These fish are meant to get quite large, around 12 - 18 inches in length. A tank environment is not a good idea for these goldfish. Outdoor ponds are better suited for them. "Fancy" goldfish is a catch all term for many types of goldfish that grow to be around the same size; 6 - 10 inches in length. Oranda, Ryukin, Fantail, Black Moor, Telescope Eye, Shubunkin, and Sarasa are all goldfish lumped into that category. Fancy goldfish should be provided at least 10 gallons per fish, although more space is always better. All goldfish produce a tremendous amount of chemical waste, thus a larger volume of water is needed to keep their living environment clean and healthy. All goldfish also have an average lifespan of 10 years.
There is a fish called a Dojo Loach, also called a Weather Loach, that is able to live well with goldfish. This fish likes cold water like the goldfish do, and it also gets big like the goldfish do. The can reach 6 - 10 inches in length.
