Good starter fish when i was little, i had a couple fish which died within a few weeks after purchase (as many parents did for there little kids). several years later i have become interested in reptiles and amphibians and since i have a spare 29 gallon tank, i want to try my luck with fish again.
i am informed about cycling the tank and intend to add live plants. I have my eye on a Eclipse Aquarium Lighting and Filtration Systems (size 3) for my tank to provide lighting and filtration. eventually i will buy a heater (my house temp ranges from 80 in the summer to 70 during the winter) and an air pump during the cycling process.
here is where the questions come: how many neon tetras can comfortably fit in the tank? do they mix with other tetras? can they live with a plecostomus? which plants would you recomend? how do i keep the water soft? any other tips?

Good starter fish for the pleco remember that some types get to be over 10in long so I would be careful about what kind you get but yes almost any fish can live with a pleco, they are bottom feeders and I have never known one to attack anything... Tetras can mix with other tetra and other community tanks, since they are schooling fish most people recomend you get at least 5 of each type you are going to have, and for the amount of fish I have heard 1in of fish per gallon, take in account the size of the fish fully grown not the size at which they are bought... as for live plants anything would be fine with the tetras but keep in mind your pleco will need a place to hide on the bottom of the tank (like a pot or some drift wood) so dont over do it... good luck!

Good starter fish you can mix several types of tetras together. my favorite tetras are black widow- they’re very hardy and good for beginners. i also recommend danios- they are always moving! live plants can be tricky so i use fake ones-petco has some that look pretty realistic. and are u having just neon tetras? i would put in 10 if they were the only fish(plus a pleco) oh and dont get the common pleco-they can get huge!

Good starter fish For plants, I’m new So I’m starting off with anubias, anacharis, water wisteria, java fern and amazon sword. Neon tetras are peaceful, so I dont think that there is a problem with mixing them with other fish. As mentioned above, I would stick with getting five of them minimum.
Hope this helps!
