I’m wondering if my goldfish is too big..?

Hello, I have a comet goldfish (was labeled as shubunkin when I first got her, but she’s a brass color, so I don’t think she really is one). Last time I measured her she was 8 inches exactly, and she’s around 2-3 inches in height. I currently have her in a 30 gallon aquarium, so I’m wondering if she is too big to be in the tank? Looking at her tank she really does seem fine and happy, but I’m just curious if she would need a bigger tank. If she’s good, could I get a few common goldfish to add as tankmates? If so, how many until the tank is fully stocked?

Shubunkin goldfish are calico colored with long flowing fins. If the fish doesn’t look like that, then, yes, you are right, you most likely have a regular comet goldfish. Shubunkins, and other "fancy" goldfish varieties, grow to be 6 - 10 inches long. Comets on the other hand grow to be 12 - 18 inches long, sometimes larger. Comets and shubunkins are streamlined and very active and agile swimmers, so the more horizontal space the better. I would get at least a 55 gallon, but going larger is better. I would only put two fish, as long as they stayed below a foot in length, in the 55 gallon. And, really, I would only put two of them because of the social nature of goldfish. A large outdoor pond would be ideal for shubunkins, and comet’s especially.

Goldfish make a tremendous amount of chemical waste, and they grow to be quite large. Having the most space possible per fish will only help you to help them; keeping the water quality decent, providing ample swimming space, etc.

I agree and have a few things to add. If you test your water for nitrates (and you should be regularly) then you should let that tell you if she is ok by herself. I never let my nitrates get above 10ppm (parts per million) However I like my water super clean, I would say that anywhere between40ppm and 60ppm is ok for the gold fish to live in. When your nitrates get that high it means its time to change the water. Depending on how often you want to change your water, you may decide to get a larger tank for them.
