well i have seen pico reefs just one gallon in size, all the way up to 1000’s in museums and libraries. the general rule for staring out is 40-60 gallons. i started out with a 45 and and im doing great. it just depends on the ammount of time you wana invest. :)

Here’s a picture of a 5.5 (five and a half) gallon pico reef at my local pet store. The possibilities are endless, if you can do the work.

Yup! I started with a 29 gallon but I know of some people who started with quite a bit smaller. With smaller tanks, when something goes wrong, it goes wrong fast!

I have a 29 gallon tank. It’s pretty bare though. Only about 20 pounds of LR, 4 hermit crabs, a couple w/c warty sea anemones, an ocean surgeonfish, and two blennies.

I’m starting up a 55 gallon.

i have had soooo many reef tanks, mainly because i worked at a LFS
maintaining a saltwater aquarium isn’t that difficult really, it just depends on what you plan on keeping in them
-i gotta warn you though SALTWATER AQUARIUMS ARE ADDICTING!!!...and expensive sometimes

this is my first aquarium, a 20 tall

and 2nd, a 55 gallon

and third, a rimless, custom made, acrylic 20 gallon SPS tank ($700 investment)yikes!

-a word of advice. stay away from stony corals

Diggin the reef tanks! The water level on your cube is extremely high. I had to look twice to see if it was a zero edge. Nice looking tanks!

I would say start with a 55 gal. You can get a 55 gal setup at walmart or such cheaper than a 40, 38, or some other small sized tanks. I started with a mantis shrimp in a 3gal, ten is inexpensive, so is a normal 20H tank, but all three require constant regular water changes and small amounts of evaporation and/or salt creep can change your salinity enough to cause problems for your animals. After the 20H the next cheapest option is going to either be the 29gal or the 55 and imho the 55 gives you the best "bang for the buck" in this case. Just my thoughts.

Yeah, it’s possible but if you’re not too sure about what you’re doing, it’d probably be smarter just to buy one. Check your local craigslist!
