 New Betta Splenden, Need advice.

I’ve just gotten my second Betta Splenden about a week ago, after my last one died after having it for about 5 years. This new one was a surprise gift so I had no time to prepare for it. (Also it’s been like 2 years since my last one so I’ve forgotten what little I knew.) This one’s so different from my first and I’m having trouble with it. (I am not a breeder, nor do I plan on becoming one.)

My first was a Royal Blue veil tail and it was a very calm, easy going fish. He wasn’t too active, but he did play. I was able to keep him in a tank originally intended for two bettas, so I’m guessing it was maybe a 1/2 gallon tank (I know that’s very small, and it was intended to be divided for two! But I didn’t really know much about bettas then. I’m not making the same mistake.) and he was healthy and lived for 5 years, which I’m told is very long. He ate his pellet food with no problem.

My new one is a turquoise/pink veil and I was given him with a 3/4 of a gallon tank as well and the same type of pellets my last one ate. I don’t think this is enough for him. He is extremely active. He keeps swimming into the glass as if he’s trying to burrow through it, and he won’t eat the pellets at all. I’m doing research to find what’s best for him.

I am planning on buying a 2.5 (maybe 5) gallon tank for him tomorrow.

1) What kind of heater works best? A lamp or one of those on the side heater things? It gets cold in my house, about 72-75 degrees so I need a heater to get it to the recommended 78-85. If a lamp is better is it all right to turn the lamp off at night? I need complete dark to sleep, but I don’t want to hurt my pets.

2) What kind of food might I give him? I don’t think any pet stores will carry the normal live/frozen food recommended so are there any flakes or other pellets I can try? His current ones are "AQUA CULTURE Betta Pellet Food" but he doesn’t eat them.

3) I have heard not to use distilled water for it lacks minerals. But that is what I used for my last one and he lived very long for a Betta. Is distilled alright? My tap water is "safe", but it is hard and I don’t feel comfortable using it. I’m using bottled water at the moment but at 1 pint a bottle replacing the water of a 2.5-5 gallon tank will become difficult. What do you recommend?

4) Also, I’ve been wondering what would make cleaning easier? Someone suggested an aquarium vacuum but I don’t know about it.

5) What do you think of "Green Mondo Grass"? Has anyone used it? It was recommended to me but I’d like some opinions.

6) I’ve heard they jump. How high/far? I’m going to keep a lid on the tank, I just want to know.

7) And I know fish have personalities but I’m curious, might there be a correlation between color and activity/personality level?

Sorry for all these questions but I want to take care of my betta. I was lucky to get such a hardy one the first time when I was stupid and new.

And one more thing. What decorations/hides do you recommend. I know to use silk not plastic plants but what kind? Tall? Leafy? Low ones? Could you post pictures of your setup?

 New Betta Splenden, Need advice.

So I have had fish for about 5 years and I have some help for ya.....
For question 3, you should use dechlorinator and vitamins. The one I used to use is Betta Plus by NutraFin.
For question 2, I use Top Fin Betta Bits. Maybe he’ll eat them, they are like super tiny peices.
For the aquarium vaccuum thing, they are siphons that suck up the water and debris and some dont use electricity. You can also use the Whisper Filter.
Ive never had my fish jump before, but I think I saw a video, and mostly they can only jump about 7 in., not usre though.

 New Betta Splenden, Need advice.

I have my betta in a 20 gallon aquarium and he eats flakes with all the other fish, of course theres no other bettas in there, if pellets dont work that might be an idea too. About the heaters, Most will show a rating on the box, it will say works best with 5 gallon tanks and so forth. Um, decor, I havent heard much differences on what you use for decor. I have live plants and just regular aquarium decorations and he seems quiet happy although they will eat some live plants. I also have had one betta leap out of an uncovered tank, so be careful, some will jump, some wont, Blue, my betta I have now, doesn’t jump at all thankfully lol Hope this helped ^-^

1. a lamp is best, the one thats built into the cover for the tank. With a 10 watt light bulb. Depends on how cold your room gets cuss turning it off can effect the temp of the water. If you cover the fron and sides with some paper you wont see the light at night. Thiers other ways to cover the light and still have it on and sleep in a dark room.

2. Most pet stores carry frozen food. Petsmart, petco, reptile stores. They all carry frozzen blood, shrimp. If you just go to your local petstore that sell fish they should have diffrent types of pillets. He also might be getting ready to mate. My girlfriend just got one and he dint eat for 7 seven days. Just keep trying fed him. He will eventually eat.

3. Distilled water is fine for betta’s. If you do use tap water just buy the water conditioner. Also check your ph level as well. Any petstores that sell fish will sell this stuff.

4. Depending on the size of your tank. Anything frm 5 gallons and under. I would just do it by hand. Keep 25% of the water in the tank put it in a bucket or another place with the betta. The other 75% tap water. Make sure you only use water to clean the tank with papper towels. Anything bigger then 6 gallons a aquarium vacuum will work, directions are on the back of the item.

5. Never used it. I think regular live or fake plats are all you need.

6. Had one betta jump right in the toilet on me and swam away. So about any where from 1-7 inches.

7. All fish are diffrent, like humans. Dont matter color type or sex.

Anymore questions please e-mail or post here will be back on soon.
