New Frill
I am new to lizards in general and have just adopted a male frilled dragon. He was for sale at a pet store and got tail rot. Also started having other problems so I took him home with me. It has been 3 days and I just went to the vet. He weighs 25 grams. My current set up is a 20 long with a 75w UV/Basking combo day light and a 50w night light. I was told to get a mercury vapor bulb which I did (100W) day and night. These are very hot. My dragon is not eating so I have started feeding him with a syringe mixing baby food (chicken and chicken broth with water). He was fed for the first time last night and again some this morning before I went to work. I also give him an antibiotic and have started putting an idodine solution on his frill, tail, back right leg, and tail base. Now after all of this my question. I am very concerned about the lighting/heating. I do not want to burn him but I also want him to have the right amount of light/heat. Am I correct in keeping the mercury vapor bulb off him until I get a larger cage and is the 75W/50W OK?
Thanks.

New Frill What brand MV light did you buy? How are you measuring the heat now in the tank? what are the dimensions of your 20 long?

New Frill Just know that it is a 20 long terrarium. I have heat and humidity devices that stick on the side of the tank. I just changed over to a 15W UVB and a 60W day and night heat lights. A new problem has arisen. He will not open his eyes for some reason and he has not gone to the bathroom. I am starting to soak him in luke warm water. I figure that if he does not change by the end of this week I will be taking him back to the vet.

New Frill Is this light you got a coil or compact light ,if so this can be one of the problems with not opening his eyes, please read this site about good & bad lights for reptiles http://www.uvguide.co.uk/index.htm
You do need to use something a little more accurate to read his temp. I would suggest getting a temp probe from wal-mart(kitchen supplies) for around 16.00 place the probe on his basking spot to get a good reading(about an hour) His basking temp should be around 90-100 F cool side around 75-85.
Make sure he is getting plenty of water, mix 1 TBS water & 1/2 TBS pedialyte and use a eye dropper putting a drop on the tip of his nose until he starts licking http://s123.photobucket.com/albums/o308/tah06/?action=view¤t=010108_17491.flv
are you giving him calcium ( rep-cal pink label) mix in with his baby food. pinch

New Frill ure first choice of lizard wasn’t a smart one this species isnt really for the beginner but listen to some of us on this forum and you should be fine just bare in mind these lizards have intermediate care requirements.
You should never buy a sick lizard chances are it will die from the stress of moving and the stress of its illness and then not only is it dead but u loose money
pet stores can give poor care to there reptiles try to find a breeder especially for this type of lizard
ure tank is a little bit small if you know the gender then he’s certaintly too big for a 20 gallon tank he should end up with a tank AT LEAST 4 foot high (they love to climb and will probably die of stress if they cannot) by 3 foot long by 2 foot wide. The more space the better though
ure 75 watt should do for the size of your tiny tank but when u get a larger tank i would personally go for something like 150 ide reccomend you look up AHS (advanced heat systems) its what i use and they are perfect for any reptile its a ceramic plate which is completely gaurded with built in thermostat looks like this

this is my tank at its most basic (when i first got it set up) since then i added loads of branchs for him to climb but this is the bare minimum you would need to keep him healthy

New Frill Well, the baby did not make it and of course the money is lost. I will not be taking any more sick lizards home as I have just too much to learn. Thanks however to all that responded.

New Frill
Sorry about your loss, even thought you don’t have them long, it can be sad... the pet store we bought our first frilly from told us they were easy to care for... hence it died 3 weeks after we brought it home.. they replaced it and I surfed the net to find out how to care for them properly. Needless to say, we’ve had our frilly, Nefretiti for 5 months and shes doin fine and growing. However, I’m not all that experienced with lizards, and never would have attempted this if I had known that they were a harder lizard to look after. We have a beardie, a blue tongued skink, 2 curly tails, a blue tailed skink , 2 anoles and a few different kinds of frogs. They are easy compared to Titi as we call her. Again, I’m sorry about your lizard, but once you get the hang of it... they’re worth while!!
