 Basking Behavior

I am curious to find out if anyone else’s dragon basks with his frill out and mouth open? Phil, does this, and I am wondering if it means he is trying to get warmer, is he cold, or is their something wrong? Here is a picture of him doing it.

As far as health issues, Evie had her vet visit yesterday, no health problems with her

Its a lizards way of panting such as what dogs do. Ive seen it with almost every species of lizard i have dealt with, including geckos and beardeds (only exception is Uromastix, who require a hot spot of 125*). Nothing to worry about, they open their mouths to alow an exchange of air to pass over their tounge and cool their head. No need to change bulbs unless the room you keep your cage in becomes much warmer due to seasonal changes (and the panting continues).

chippychop how long have you been keeping reptiles?

frilled dragons open their mouths while basking to DISPLACE heat, reptiles cant swet, but this is normal behaviour and if he was too hot he would move, thats the whole point of having an enclosure with gradient temperature, so he can move to a temp that suits him at that time

I mostly keep frogs from the family Megophrys (Malaysian Horned Frogs, etc) and was just a little worried because if I were to find one of them with their mouth open, it could be any number of issues - MBD, broken jaw, etc. I know reptiles and amphibians are vastly different, but I just wanted to be sure. I was hoping it was a good thing because I love to see his frill open like that. It’s funny. Besides, it’s the only time I have ever seen it happen.

As for the screen enclosure, what you can’t see is that half the top and the back are covered with a thin, clear plastic sheet to help hold in humidity and heat. I left the front and half the top open so that air exchange could still be done.

He is really cute, he has a morning routine. He comes down to the floor, goes to his water, drinks, then eats a few roaches in his bowl from the day before, and then he will go up and sun himself with his frill open. I have never encountered a lizard like the frilled before. They are so strange and full of personality.

Thanks for the information.

Yep, I’ve noticed frilleds are very active in the morning. I usually wake up about a hour or so after his lights come on. By then all the crickets and worms are gone and his water will be dirty. So i spray him down, let him drink a bit and either feed him or clean his cage. If I’m not to busy, I’ll pull him out and let him run around a little bit.

I try to feed him before i leave for the day, the next time they seem very active is afternoon on to dusk. This is also the time females lay their eggs in the wild.

Great pics! I was just browsing and looking at posts and such. I have a Uromastyx that does do the panting thing every once in a while as well. It’s rare, but it does happen, specially on a very hot day!

Thanks for the input folks. Phil is doing well, and getting fat. He has only shed his frill and nothing more. Is this normal. It’s been almost 2 weeks since he did that. How often do they shed?

your right! colts about the heat vapor displacement/in answer to your question/I have been in the world of reptiles for about twenty yrs now! I have a relatively new frilly about a yr old/and he’s doing amazing by far one of the coolest lizards ever!my frilly opens his mouth to take in heat he does it in the morning at first light!I can tell be caused after gets the heat ration he needs then it’s off and running around the cage. I agree that most frillies will open there mouth to let out some steam sort of speak/but for some wacky reason my frilly seems to do everything back words!oh well he’s still great/my frilly does a lot of tidying up after himself /mines a neat freak he has a secret place to leave droppings making it easier to clean up after!so in telling you I am a hobbyist horticulturist(spell)I,m getting ready to go back to school to be a reptile vet!I’ll be Dr. Chip The rockstarvet! ha ha !!and my lizards will be my back vocals ha ha !! anyway good luck to all the new babies out there ! chip
