Taming Tricks!!!’!’!’!’! I have a large corner unit tank that I built with and it has proper lighting, heat, humidity, and plenty of branches, but my frilly seems to always hide out at the top of the tank, almost as if hes hiding. Whenever I go to handle him he frills up and backs off. Does anyone have any taming tricks I could try out?? Sometimes I put a towel over the tank to give him more privacy. I’m open for ideas!!!
Thanks

Taming Tricks!!!’!’!’!’! First a few questions.
How old is the animal?
What sex?
How large is it?
What temps are you at in this enclosure (ambient, hot spot(s), and the animal itself at different times of day)
What history do you and the animal have, such as did you just get it, had it for a year, etc.
Do you have other animals, dogs, cats, other Herps...esp snakes or social lizards (bearded dragons or anoles)
things like that will help a lot more than just saying you have a frilled that is hiding.
These are very intelligent lizards, and a lot goes into their temperament and reasons behind it. For the most part, females seem to be skittish from time to time, even well after they are tame. Males cool down A LOT once they get some size on them and are older, in the wild they will generally have fewer threats to deal with and they mellow right out. Young males seem very jumpy until they get used to interaction. Having the animal in a high traffic area, on the floor, etc will create a lot of stress and this will surely add a lot to them being defensive and stress is not good for them.
Instinct tells it to run and flee, its alot of work to re-wire that programing, but its really worth it when you can scoop the animal up and hand feed it pinkies while it jumps a foot out of your hand.

Taming Tricks!!!’!’!’!’!
sounds like your off to a great start /remember that frillies are actually very shy and very timid! it took me a long time to establish a strong realationship with my frilly /I have a male and he’s about a yr old he used to play peek a boo with me /now all he does is give me a hard time about being late to feed him.at first it would stress him out just to be around the cage /but heres a trick that I did!I took a superworm and after days of coaxing he finally took the worm from my hand/and after a few months of this he finnally warmed up to me/and now he hangs out with me and is just an all around great lizard.today he ate a lizard from my hand before I even got to put it into his cage. he knows that I’m his sorce of food /so I,m an ok guy to him now.also when I feed him I call out his name /when I do he comes a runnin I,m not even kidding! anyway hope that helps I guess I would say one final thing it takes some time to establish a great realationship/ it’s so rewarding when it goes through!thanks Chip!

Taming Tricks!!!’!’!’!’! ok well its a male about 7 months old and is 12 inches in length. I’ve had him for a month now and his tank is raised off the floor. the temps range from 110f to 70f. I don’t have any other pets, but he does see people everyday. I’m running a black light heat lamp 24/7 and a 5.0 UVB coiled bulb for 12 hours a day, which I’m going to swith to a tube light ASAP.

Taming Tricks!!!’!’!’!’! does anyone handfeed their frilled?? I think this will calm him down a bit cuz he frills at my hand everytime I try to handle him. But seems to be ok with me in the tank fixing things up and stuff ... Which is weird. Any other suggestions are appreciated

Taming Tricks!!!’!’!’!’! how big is your tank? i used to have my female in a 40"x24x24 (100 gal) tank when she was around 11.5 inches. she didn’t hide all that much but she didn’t eat much at all. i put her in a smaller (40 gal) tank and she started eating crazy amounts and was much more tame. id take in consideration the size of your tank. and if you dont think its the size of the enclosure there isn’t that much more you can do to taming. just time. you can try hand feeding but that could stress him out even more.
i dont hand feed my female very often but i hand feed my NG male everytime. he used to hiss at me occasionally but as soon as i started feeding him by hand he rarely ever does any more.

Taming Tricks!!!’!’!’!’! since the last post ! well my male is going through somekind of territorial thing! he has two cages /one inside the house and then a huge 72" by 46" by 46"outside. he was a nice lizard untill I gave him more room and now my male is somewhat aggressive and sometimes he doesn’t want to be held or loved or even fed/its just best to leave him alone for his little sperts /what i think is happeneing is he’s going through somekind of puberty and has become a very active lizard ///when he thinks no one is looking he will get to a high spot and display his male trates //such as blowting his neck and even small flares of frills! I think its funny/cuase when he knows I’m watching he doesn’t really act like an aggressive lizard//what is neet to this day is that I can hand feed him /but for some reason he won’t eat in the big vivarium/mabey because it’s to new to him/and it might be alittle too exciting for him for right now ///but I know he loves it!I hope yours loves life as well!Chip! I will post pics of the new viv/for you soon!
