Probing is not necessary. Animals can be sexed fairly accurately at a young age until they are a few months old and grow thicker tail muscles. Sex them the same way you would sex a baby beardie or rankin.

For 100% accuracy there is proof that researchers in Australia would actually pop the lizards hemipenes out to verify TSD studies. As far as i know, no one pop’s baby or adult lizards, I personally never have and would not recommend it to anyone. Trying to learn this practice could easily injure the animal and make it sterile or kill it from infection.

well I,m studying to be a reptile vet, and at sometime I will have to do probing just cause it,s part of the degree/actually if done correctly then there is only mild irritation ;however done incorrectly can lead to problems and damage vital organs/heres the thing if you don’t probe then good luck figuring out if you have a male or female ’’’also I wouldn’t recommend any popping or probing until lizard is mature/babies are babies and are very delicate (all babies are delicate)thats my imput on the subject thanks for the comment CHIP!

point taken.
i will rephrase what i said i meant as a mere mortal probing and popping should not be done as it can damage the animal. since your a trainee vet then oviously this is an inportant part of your study and training. i was at an expo in england a couple months back and they were showing us mere mortals how to do this (both probing and popping) and i was horrified.
good luck with your study and training.
i am not to fussd about the sex of my frilly to be honest although i may change my mind when he is older as he/she is just a juvie at the moment.
my daughter in her ultimate wisdom had our snake probed the other week, as we have been asked so many times to breed due to its stuning color, not unusual i will add but very strong.
again i wish you all the best in your studies there are not enough vets as far as i am concerned i take my hat of to you sir as they say..... a fine profession
