 Sexing a frill

my casper was so kind enough to let me sex him. after doing such my lil miniture weener dog came over. and he started getting really grumpy and frilling.. oh poor thing...

so here we go!!!!!

heres sleepy casper and his naughty bits

notice how casper has a depression between his lumps, it cast a shadow between his hemi, i had perfect lighting for these pictures to show off the shadow and highlight of the lumps.

dasy was a lil more difficult as she is more skittish. i tried my best to sex her, they arnt as good of pix as casper.

notice how daisy does not have this shadow, but a highlight instead, its more shown as an "out of focus" blurr rather then a shaddow and highlight, but you can definantly see how the scales curve down and around a lump.

if any one needs more pictures please let me know and i will try my best to take some more of the female.

notice how small she is too. they are really easy to sex
now i dont exactly know if they are like bearded dragons, where they can show sex later on from looking like a female. and having there boy parts show later on. if any one can help me with that one bit of information that would be great, so far i have not had this happen, (since april)

i belive its true because i have also noticed females grow at a MUCH slower rate. seeing that i have had her since april... hmmm curious!

I’d wait and see as Agamids can throw you a loop sometimes. But until someone on here shows an adult (2 yr +), there are a few tricks to be certain of sexes before they lay eggs. Males have a more colorful orange and tan coloration where females retain the "camoflauge" juvenile pattern. Males have bigger and wider heads and they have a pair of longer 2 front "fang" teeth when they gape their mouths open. The hemipenes are just like in Beardies as you illustrated above w/ your male. The frill is bigger vs a female also on males. Their back patterns tend to be less busy w/ males too. This being the PNG and Cape York types that we all have, not in the Aussie variety from the NT. Yours look promising to be a 1.1 so far and look healthy. Nice!

i had a female that had bright orange/rose color belly with red in her frill instead of yellow. i am not sure if she was a cross bread with an ausi or what, she was an import.
she is the one who now has gout.... poor thing.... importing is a horrible practice

Thoughts on sexing frills. I would not depend on the raising tail method to properly sex juvenile animals. It is not consistent. I have had animals that I thought were one and ended up being the other. Whenever I sell juvenile animals- unless I sexed them as hatchlings and marked them I do not sell anything sexed. It is obvious when they are adults if you have both sexes to compare. I will agree that coloration is an indicator much of the time. Babies can be popped before the tail gains fat cells- thats when you would know what it was. I wouldnt try to sex anytign until almost 2 years of age. I had a male that I thought was female until it was 3. Then all of a sudden it’s head grew big and square over a few months. That was this year.... screwed up my breeding plans- but for the better actually.

yeah, i have 2 definant males, but i have 2 probable females. i know one day they may be male, i had that happen with my bearded dragon. i hope for the best. but you can definantly tell male if they already developed the lumps...

 Sexing a frill

If you really want to sex your frills with 100% accurate. My vet takes a saline solution injects it in base of tail about 1 1/2 inches down toward the vent if it is male it will evert the hemi pene it it is female nothing happens. the saline is use up by the body with no harm to your frills. I have had him sex my babies at 3 months old after hatching and is 100% accurate every time.. Your vet needs to be a true reptile vet and understand the procedure though.. Hope this helps
