 To hot to dry!

so i’ve been doing a slight experiment with the humidity in my enclosure... previous enclosure had alot of ventilation. my new enclosure not so much. for the first week or 2 the substrate was still wet so humidity was in the upper 70’s and 80’s and they were eating like pigs. i let the substrate dry out. its been about 50% humidity inside the enclosure and they arnt lookingn to happy. their apitite is decreased there colors are dark. the big guy has his head low.

over all i needed to let the enclosure dry out to prevent bad smells and mold. i need to figure a way to vent. prob using computer fans. no problem!!!

just thought i’d share my experience with you guys

 To hot to dry!

i forgot to add. in the enclosure i have a 125 wat MVB which is really warm. if i am not carefull with that bulb it could get to hot. but i counter acted that warmth with only using a 26 wat home compact fluorescent bulb on the other side.

the mvb is 6 inches away from them at the closes point.

the whole back of the enclosure is coverd in almost 2 inch thick cork bark. the bottom of enclosure is coconut husk substrate. holds humidity very well so the lights arnt an issue with dehydration unless humidity drops...

most likely i will remove the MVB, place in a 4 foot flourescent tube, i need a new ballast for that though. and everything will be perfect.

just goes to show. you cant use big bulbs in small areas, humidity and ventilation are key.

i already raised humidity in the enclosure. problem solved.

:) im still getting usto this new enclosure!!!

 To hot to dry!

that sounds way to big for a young frill. you wont want bigger then 36x18x36 (tall and long) for a young frill. they will be way to scared and stressed.

i have lots of posts around this forum. research with in the threads provided here and you will be able to read plenty of information you need to know, as well as find pictures of my enclosures.

im not going to tell you much more then that cuz you’ll have to research on your own. i promis there is alot of info in these threads. and you should spend at least 2 hours reading and learning before you bring your frill home. all the info you need is right here for you :)

once you do this.. start your own thread and post questions. i’ll be more then happy to answer specific questions!!!

if you were to use the 6 foot long enclosure. you would need a crap load of lighting, humidity and the right amount of ventilation to achieve the temps required.

unless your an experienced keeper, i recomend starting small then working your way up. it took me 3 weeks to get my newest enclosure perfect.
