 Picture of the little guy

This is our new guy we picked up on Sunday. Notice all the river rocks on the bottom of the tank. Those will be removed soon, we don’t want to make too many changes yet until he gets settled in. Does anyone know what type of subsrate that might be in the bottom of the tank?

The previous owner had everything wrong! I am going to swtich him to our beardie’s tank since it’s a bit taller but want to wait until next week . What kind of subsrate do you recommend, and if you can post some links that would be great. I need to order a MVB and fixture, probably from Pet Mountain so I’ll order some substrate as well. I was thinking about going away from ’dirt’ all together and use reptile carpet.

Paper towel is good, I love and use reptile carpet. The frilly is absolutly beautiful. Oh and make sure you clean the tank out. If you kept another reptile in it clean the cage with a little bleach and hot water and make sure you rinse it out well. Congrats on the frilly!

yes, he is a little guy, we were told about 5 months old. I have lots of newspaper, so I’ll use that for now then switch to reptile carpet later. I run a ferret shelter, so I have some cleaners that are disinfectants that I use for the ferret cages that are safe. But I;’ll still make sure to rinse the tanks well after I disinfect them.

I am getting a bit concerned about him though, he hasn’t eaten since Monday when ate 7 crickets. He’s still active and his head is still held high, but I just wish he’d eat!

just relax about the not eating. make sure temps are accurate and about 85-100 degrees. no lower no higher untill the lil guy eats.

100 of course is the baskingn spo ;) 85 is ambient.

i like using 20 gallon tanks with the fronts coverd (40 gallon f or biger reptiles) . completely covering the from reduces stress and outside stimulation.

if your concerned with him eating. make sure he’s at least staying well hydrated. good humidity at about 65% and quiet area. no red light at night.

if he isnt eating by next monday, take him out and give him a quiet warm (not hot not cold) bath in the sink tub or any container in a quiet area for about 30 min.

keeping him well hydrated will help. dehydration is a good reason for not eating. next to stress that is.

just keep calm. sometimes my guys dont eat for a few days too <3

Just wanted to give you an update - he is eating well, just not eating daily. Sometimes he’ll eat 3-4 crickets, sometimes just a couple, and some days not at all. We got him to eat a super worm a couple of days ago. They tend to borrow in the substrate so it’s hard for him to get them. The house is quiet during the day since we’re all at work, so he gets lots of ’chill’ time. I put finely chopped greens (at the moment collards and turnip greens) in his tank daily but I don’t think he’s eating them.

I can tell he’s grown in the last 2 weeks. I should be getting our MVB light, reptile carpet, and a water fall this week. Once all that arrives, we will be doing the tank switch with our beardie and do away with the awful substrate that’s in his current tank. The carpet should make it easier for him to get at the worms too.

He’s also just started to shed.

reptile carpet is not a good idea. its a bed for bacteria and other yucky stuff. if your not ready for coconut husk sub strate then try paper towels. but that reptile carpet stuff is baad news. its also pretty expensive too. i know alot of people like it cuz they can wash it but i just dont trust it since its so porous. also ... with the amount of humidity you need in the tank and daily mistings its even worse to have reptile carpet....

coconut husk is really cheep . a block for 3$ can fill a 40 gallon tank. 2 blocks can fill my big show tank. its easily sifted for poopies and you can saturate it for humidity all day long or even up to 3-4 days i have noticed on my less vented tank.

reptile carpet is just.. bleh... its mostly for bearded dragons since they dont require humidity, and lepord geckos and stuff. but think. u need 50-65% humidity. reptile carpet wont cut it. and if it does. its gong to start stinking really really bad since its not ment to hold water. its going to be like having a towel on the bottom of your tank!!!

I got the reptile carpet pretty cheap, on clearance, so no big deal if I can’t use it for the frilled, or I may use it for the beardie, esp. since winter is coming and the ceramic tile tends to be cold.

Where do you get your coconut husk from? Is this what you’re referring to?

yes thats it. zilla brand makes it and exo-tera calls it eco-earth i think. its always in block form and typically about 250-3$ per block or you can get double or tripple packs for even more cheep.

i use that stuff for months at a time since its so easy to clean, doesnt mold easy, doesnt smell musty, holds water and dries out at a good rate and holds water again.

over all my fav sub strate. and i’ve tried alot @_@
