 Hmm?

hey all, im new to this section, not to the forums though. ive been researchign and thinking for ahwile now and i think im going to jump in here and buy my first frilles dragon. im not new to herps. i keep/breed bearded dragons and i have many of them. i have 2 adult male green iguanas both a little over 4 foot long, i used to have a chinese water dragon, i have poison dart frogs, albino pacman frogs, firebelly toads. im not alowed to have any snakes my mother wont allow them in the house :p. well if i buy one ill be buying a baby captive bred. i plan to keep it in a zoomed 18x18x18 cube for a little while until he outgrows it(its a very easy cage tokeep the humidity up in so i thnk its better for ther babies since they need the humidity for growth and such). he will then be transfered to a glass cage i have thats 7feet long and 2 feet tall(i know i need to get more height on this thing) i just dont want to build him a wooden cage because that it why i needed to rehome my water dragon, i could not keep the humidity up high enough in a huge wooden sealed cage. i have plexiglass cut to fit the op of the tank(it has bearded dragons in it right now and its divided but im building A stacked cage type thing so i can have all my beardies all on one wall of my bedroom) so this tank will then be free for the frillie :). now theres a few questions i had. which is better 5.0 or 10.0 uvb. at least for the 18x18x18. once he goes in the larger tank ill have a MVB bulb(i use them for my iguanas and its thebest way for uvb if u ask me) i have a 5.0 on the 18x18x18 right now even though it is a dart frog cage at the moment(have ther uvb for the frogs for the plants, the frogs dont need uvb) so i waswondering if i could just keep that light on there? he shouldnt be in the 18x18x18 very long because they grow pretty fast ive heared. also, when im setting up the 7ft tank ii was thinking of going all out on a nice looking cage(my beardies are pretty simple setupswith tile and such to make it easier on me) but i was thiking eco earth for the substrate... i have a waterfall thing that i bought from the white plains ny reptile expo its a decent size itsn ot one of those exo terra onesits a big one and it has apond type thing at the bottom. that will go in there too. ill have lots of vines and branches and iwas wondering if i could use live plants for looks? as long as they arent poisonous plants i should be ok right? and then the MVB bulb and then just a regular flourescent shop light for ambient lighting. does this sound good? im getting quite exited i love frilleds so i decided to make my last lizard a frillie. of corse ill still eb getting more and more beardies beause i breed but this will be my last "non- beardie" lizard. my iguanas botyh have cages i built 6ft tall 5 feet long and 4 feet wide. but the wood doesnt hold humidity too well so i ust thought this glass tank would be best. any suggestins/opinions will be greatly appreciated. also, he will not be eating off of the eco earth so therewill be no risk of impaction at all. also, sorry for the long post, but for food.. dubia roaches, superworms, crix, and meal worms okay? or??

thanks again.

Derek

 Hmm?

hey derek, sorry no body replied to your thread....

here is what i do to make wooden enclosures that hold humidity
Link

that first link to this forum Link will tell you how. the other links will tell you where to get other stuff.

the 18x18 cube will do great. as for the uvb. make sure its a liniar uvb bulb. 5.0 is ok if your dragon can get close to it but 10.0 is best. liniar tubes are less powerful then the coil style bulbs. but the coil style bulbs are more dangerous since their uvb levels are unsafe.

uvb from a liniar bulb deminishes at about 10 -12 inches its so little its stupid. no joke. so uvb 10 would be best . uvb 5 would be ok as long as they can bask with in 3-5 inches from it.

the 7 foot enclosure sounds, not ideal at all. here is why:

dispite what care sheets say. your frilled dragon will want it HOT, like, bearded dragon hot. 85 cool and 95 warm. 90 ambient, 110 basking. of course 110 basking, spot basking. just the peak of the basking zone you should see 110-120 if your using an IR heat temp gun. those are great and only 30$ or so. good investment if you ahvent gotten one yet. get one. its the best tool you can use if you care at all about your reptiles.

humidity should feel like a hot humid summer day if you stick your arm in the enclosure. i dont use gauges for humidity. i know its humid because the glass front fogs up for 2-3 hours a day, but i let them dry out so that the substrate does not get mold or mildew or bacteria. high humidity doesnt require wet substrate, at all!!!

proper limited ventilation, and proper temps will bring humidity up. 75 degree enclosure wont fog up and wont hold humidity as well as 85 degree enclosure!!!

i feed my frilled dragons roaches and super worms that are gut loaded with a verity of vegies.

live plants, not that great. your dragon will just climb all over them and rip them up. these guys like to explore. so i would just skip live plants all together. save them for your frogs :)

you dont need live plants to keep humidity up!

wooden enclosures are lame, but melamine enclosures are super awesome. i’ve never had an issue with any of mine, i built all of mine .

 Hmm?

oh i totally skipped over something

7 foot enclosure doenst sound ideal because to achieve the right temps in that large of an enclosure, you’ll have to have at least 400-500 watts of lights just to keep temps up. NOT ideal.

in a 4x4 enclosure 2 feet deep i have 175-225 watts to keep it warm. 2 small vents and dry substrate . keeps it at about 80 in one corner but 85-95 every where else. the lights are mounted on the inside.
