 Air sacs under frills?

I have a frilled dragon that is about a year old. His name is Gideon. We just got home from vacation and he has puffy air sacs under his frills. It’s all under his frills on his chest around to the sides under his frills. We had a gal here to take care of our babies while we were gone. He’s been eating roaches regularly and drinks water regularly. He doesn’t act any different than normal. And he looks healthy all except the air sacs. We have been home for two days and we have been soaking him in warm baths. We thought maybe he got stressed out because we were gone and it was a different gal feeding him and taking care of him, but they haven’t gone down and I’m starting to get worried. He’s my little sweetheart and I want to make sure this is nothing painful to him or serious enough for a vet. (I really feel like the vets around here don’t know too much about lizards, let alone a frilly.) I haven’t been able to find anything about this on the internet so any help is greatly appreciated!

 Air sacs under frills?

hello!!! rubix should post on here soon i’ll shoot her an email to post here to to help you.

we have figured it may be due to to much of a vitamin.

do you dust the food you feed to your frilled dragon? to much of the vitamin dusting may be doing this.

for right now, and the next few days do NOT use dusting on the feeders you give to your frilled dragon..

list exactly what you feed your frilled dragon in your reply.

also, is your frilled dragon kept warm, 80-95 degrees? no less then 80 degrees day time in the enclosure.(night time can be less)

 Air sacs under frills?

oh and, it may take a week or so for the fluid to re-absorb into the body. i had this happen with my very first frilled dragon. and i’ve had a friend have this happen to her frilled dragon too, hers turned out to be fine as well as mine way back then. its nothing permanent but u just got to figure out the cause and stop doing what ever is causing it .
vet visits can be extremely stressful for a frilled dragon especially if the vet is not experienced. i always pack my reptiles in an insulated box with heat pad when going into a vet office cuz its SO cold. my vet actually offers an incubator while i wait.

 Air sacs under frills?

It’s an interesting condition and there’s frustratingly little information available online about it. The closest thing I could find was the gular edemas (you can google this) that some chameleons can get. However, I don’t know if these conditions are related in the least since chams & frills are only distant relatives and there doesn’t appear to be an analogous widespread condition in the agamid family.

My guess is that it’s largely caused by stress, but I can’t give a definitely answer. Anyhow, mine only had the condition for about a week and then it cleared up. It re-occurred to some extent during the next shed cycle, but disappeared again shortly. Based solely from my own limited experience, it’s most likely not serious so long as he is otherwise in good health.

Some things you can do (and these apply to general care as well): Ensure ambient temps are hot (go add another light), keep him well-hydrated, and don’t stress him out too much. Heat & hydration should keep his system operating properly. Once it starts to drain, it should disappear quickly.

I hope he recovers quickly for you!

ah thats right, so it was stress and not a vitamin issue.
heat and hydration is key. keep temps 85-95 gradient. no less then 85 any where in the enclosure durring the day. 80 is "ok" but you really want to up the temps. i know its getting to be winter so make sure your temps are GOOD during the day and no less then 70-65 durring the night. 65 is pretty low.... ceramic heat elements can be dangerous, i like heat rope better, tapped to the glass, found at petsmart for 17$ which is a GREAT price. heat rope by zoo-med it has a chameleon on the box. that is if your night temps are getting to cool....

Oh my goodness! Thank you so much! His heat is 90-95 on the hot side and 80-85 on the cool side. Though he has always preferred the cool side. He eats been 5-10 roaches depending on the size a day plus usually a couple horned worms. :) he’s a spoiled boy. His air sacs still haven’t gone down though. And I have been giving him baths every day. He’s getting more and more agitated with my boyfriend, but he never frills at me. I think he’s just stressed, it took him almost two months to get used to our new home. He’s always been a pretty dramatic guy. <3 but it makes me love him more!

does he stress in the baths? i wouldnt soak him to often if its stressing him. i would reduce handling to minimal and just up the misting.
