Emergency - need help - frog injured by cat

One of my cats got into the frog habitat and either scooped up Flip (the frog) or tried to grab at it after if jumped out. I rescued the poor thing - it was hiding under the baseboard heating duct. It was still wet so I’m assuming it happened within 5 minutes of me finding it. I cleaned out the habitat because it was now a mess. I put the 2 frogs in a tiny goldfish bowl I had - I use it for emergencies such as this. While putting them back I noticed the one had what looked like blood near it’s side. After getting it in some clean water and could better see the injury, it looks like muscle strands hanging out as well as possibly a blood vessel. It is not bleeding right now. I was really scared and immediately put in a tiny amount of Melafix in the water and let it soak for a couple minutes. I now have it sitting on top of a moist paper towel and I put in a kale leaf for it to hide under and covered it up with a hat of mine so it can calm down and keep the drafts out. Is there anything else I can do for it? It’s a leopard frog that finally morphed completely in the middle of December. It’s still relatively small. Please help. Here’s a pic of it (the best I could get):

Those are internal organs protruding through the hole on his side. Your going to have to take him to a vet and even then I’m not sure there is alot they will be able to do if the organ is severely damaged. Cats also have a nasty bacteria on their teeth and claws that can cause infections.

If you really want him to make it I would say contact a vet as soon as you possibly can.

OK, the earliest I can get it in is tonight - it’s still hopping around like nothing happened and when I peaked at it it jumped back under the leaf. I hope it’ll be ok. Should I put it under a light to keep it warm or will that dry it out being it’s not in water?

I also just noticed there’s a blob like gelatinous thing hanging under the wound and when the frog moves, it doesn’t come off. I’m not going to touch it, I’m just asking. The tissue hanging out looks a little smaller now that it’s out of water. Should I keep it in water and soak some more with the Melafix or what? I’m new to frogs - I have had turtles and fish longer and have more experience with them.

I know that it is sometimes hard to justify going to a vet for an animal that may have only costs a few dollars, but I think it is your only real option. Having grown up in a family of wildlife rehabilitators/veternarians it seems like there would be little a vet could do here. Personally, I would just leave it alone, as it seems there is little you can do. Again, the vet is the best option, but I don’t think that he/she is going to be able to do much for your frog.

I know about the cost benefit - I worked for a vet and I know how things are. I’m still hopeful. I’ll get the little guy in tonight. I looked up some frog anatomy websites where there are actual pictures of dissections and I am pretty sure that what’s hanging out is muscle. The closest organ to that part of body is the liver and I am pretty sure it’s not that. There is muscle tissue surrounding all the organs and it’s just a tiny piece hanging out so I’m hoping that’s all it is. Maybe the vet can poke it back in and use some tissue glue to close it. I know it’s a longshot but the poor thing just morphed 3 weeks ago.

I have seen that happen many times with frogs. You cannot underestimate the resiliance of amphibians. Just keep him in a sterile environment like the one you have with ABSOLUTELY no feces. His body may be able to heal on its own. Just don’t touch him to prevent infection.

Good Luck

frogs generally are not very good at healing, kind of like lizards. by the time you see there is something wrong it is usually too late. I would probably put it out of its misery, judging by the pictures. You can take it to a vet, but honestly it is probably not going to make it.

Best wishes, and I’m sorry if i upset you. I’m just trying to be realistic.

GOOD LUCK! :)

I think amphibians would be fantastic at healing themselves. They’re whole physiology allows for it. The legs come out of openings and it seals up afterwards. Why wouldn’t it be able to regenerate torn tissue? The vet put in 2 sutures to close the wound and it’s still alive 24 hours later now...

I’m so glad you took it to the vet. What did the vet say? Does he/she think that it was just muscle also?
I’m so glad you didn’t take the advice to put it down. Like you said, it wasn’t acting like it was hurt, so why not try and see if the vet can help it.

Good luck!! Cheers to you for being a responsable pet owner!!

So far so good - yes the vet said it was muscle tissue like I thought is was. The little guy is still alive. I put in 4 tiny crickets yesterday but so far it hasn’t eaten them. Hopefully it’ll get it’s appetite back soon.

It’s still alive surprisingly...it ate 1 cricket a couple days ago and another one last night. One of the sutures fell out already. It looks like it’s going to stay closed and is healing. I’m hoping the other suture stays in as long as needed. I’ve been trying to keep the little guy wet without being soaked to keep those sutures in. I bought a couple electrolyte products for reptiles and are using them. Seriously though, I’m really surprised it’s still around, I was so scared at first but now I’m just hoping to get it back into the habitat with it’s companion soon so I can stop worrying about it.

It’s still doing well. It ate another cricket last night and is defecating. I bought some Repti Aid the other day thinking I’d somehow get it down it’s mouth but after figuring that won’t happen logistically, I decided to just let it soak in it for 5 minutes. I did the soaks like 4 times in 24 hours and it became a lot more active after that. I figured since so much gets absorbed through the skin it’s better than nothing. It’s loaded with protein and vitamins and all good stuff sick reptiles need when they don’t feel like eating. The wound looks completely healed now - going to the vet on Thursday for a recheck.
