OMG! My pacman has prolapsed his stomach????????

When I went to check him this am, It looked like his tongue was out and swollen and had a splinter in it.

At least that is what I thought...

I put gloves on and put him in some warm h2o. I took tweezers and started to pull out the "splinter". I held the tongue so I wouldnt pull it out.. then I pullled out about 2.5 inches of material. I think moss. The intestine or stomach turned pink it was blue (lack of blood flow), but was still sticking out so I gently put it back in his mouth and it went away.

I am a vet tech for the record, but we dont treat frogs. I am worried about this guy. He is so darn cute. Whatelse should I do?? Do you think he will make it? Aaaaaaaaarggghhh. No more moss.

Your right on removing moss.... Some get impacted on eco earth too... Depends on the frog. Soil is best for some....

I would get your temps up to 5f above his normal temps 24/7...this helps healing.

Next don’t feed....usually prolapse is related to over feeding but not always... It can be too large of food or even too much in one feeding or even impaction..

Next give him some mineral drops...try two to 4 drops depending on frog size (adult 4 drops).. This can be done up to a week...
What I’m looking for here is if he is impacted or not. When a frog brings up its sometimes because it can’t go down...
Many times you can offer a frog mineral oil on a crix but in this case I would just drop it on his mouth and let it seep in unless you can get it in his mouth...

Next once a day dip him in treated water (4oz) enough to sit in.....warm it in microwave for 15 to 20 sec... just above room temp so its warm not hot... Get him to sit in it for 5 min.... This helps relieve impaction in the intestines...

For now try this for a few days...look for waste... If he passes waste you know he’s not impacted. Then very slowly offer him smaller meals. Try just a couple of crix first and slowly increase but from now on cut his meals in 1/2 and maybe feed more often rather than too large.. If he’s impacted after a week with no waste then we can try a couple of other things you can get from your vet...

Do you feed fatty foods?...mice, superworms?..... Cut all these out for now... crix only till healing around 2 months... Then you can add maybe worms first then maybe a pinkie not full size mice..

If you have any questions I’m usually on the treefrogs forum or you can pm me....

If he falls ill lethargic/ ill overall (gut feelings)..you can try the mela fix remedy posted on the treefrogs or contact me for information on baytril etc...

well he is only a baby. I do feed him a lot of crickets. These pics were a week ago when he was fine.

He seems ok now. I have him nice and warm and I will try a drop of mineral oil after I go to the store.

Do I have to worry about this happening all his life if he makes it? Thanks for your detailed post.

OMG! My pacman has prolapsed his stomach????????

Just an update...

He is doing fine (so it seems) and he ate 1 small cricket today and seems ok. I hope things are going to be ok now. Been soaking him like you said and gave him a drop of mineral oil. I think eating is a good sign.

Cant see any waste but could be I cant see it. He did stay in one sppot for a while so I dont think he pooped yet. I got him to move around a bit. Please keep your fingers crossed.

Though appetite can be a good sign...impacted frogs will still eat and many captive frogs over eat.

The reason for this is in the wild food only comes along so often and in captivity they don’t think different so gobble all thats offered...

So really you want waste... As he is a baby you don’t want him starving.... just offer minimal food. If he is impacted you don’t want to add to his condition. Some pacman don’t show waste for a month so it can be difficult...

As far as for life on the prolapse... Much study hasn’t be done but in general once its happened its more likely to happen again. Thats not always a bad thing to be forewarned as it will enquire the owner to be careful on over feeding him... It may never after care but its always a possibility now.... So I would say ’yes’ to this question..

Keep me posted Melissa.. I’m glad he’s ok now...Are you using the mela fix?.... It can’t hurt if your not. It will help keep any chance of infection or inflamation down... It can be done with his soaks (5 min) is ok with the mela..... Also ok with mineral oil.. The mela is tee tree oil based so can help against impaction as well..

Hope it all works...

This is a little bit controversial because of the increased parasite risk, but if you’re okay with having an occasional stool test run and popping a little medicine into his mouth if you have to, you might want to go with earhtworms instead of crickets for a while. If you rinse them until they void their intestines there’s far less indigestible material there than with a cricket. I use roaches as my staple for bug-eaters, but any time anybody who’ll eat worms seems to be running a day or two late I switch over to worms and always see results the next morning. Plus, their shape makes them easy to handfeed and their stickiness makes them easy to dust.
