Canadian Nightcrawlers: New Favorite for my Bullfrogs

So I was at Walmart and I saw they were selling canadian nightcrawlers in the fishing section. They were refrigerated like mealies and waxies, so I took them out to look at them, and figured, HEY! these would be great for my bullfrogs. So I bought a box of 24 (it was only 3 bucks so if they didn’t eat them it wasn’t a big deal) and brought them home. I tried first on my pyxie frog (he’s about 4 inches long now). He chowed down 3 nightcrawlers like they were candy. So I tried feeding them to my albino american bullfrogs (they only eat when its pitch black so I didn’t see them eat), but within 20 minutes the nightcrawlers I had put in there were eaten. I also gave some to my allen’s goliath frog, but since he is very jumpy and lives in an enclosure with a high moss content, I don’t know how many he ate (because sticking my hand in his cage stresses him out and digging through the moss would just make it worse).

So the conclusion of this post is: Bullfrogs LOVE Canadian Nightcrawlers. I suggest you get some if you have some big frogs to feed (these worms are a good 4 inches long and the thickness of a pencil, so small frogs wont eat them).

I use them too, in moderation; they’re fattier and carry more parasite risk than crickets, roaches, etc, but they do have convenience and digestibility in their favor. And I get annnual parasite checks done anyway, so I think giving the intestines a break from dealing with insect chiton all the time is worth it.

I don’t suggest feeding directly on moss though. A disproportionate number of substrate inpactions occur from moss. I like moss; I use it too, but I sink a big dog bowl into it (something your frog can actually fit into and still have room to eat) and leave the worms or nonclimbing roaches in there so no big strands can stick to them. Makes it easier to monitor eating habits, too.

Trout worms have the same pros and cons for littler frogs that nightcrawlers do for bigger ones.

I give them to my 2 ACFs who are a good 4 inches (not including legs). Also, to one of my Paddletail newts.

My Pixie LOVES nightcrawlers too. He perks right up and charges after it as soon as I drop it in! but like jack I give in moderation also. Worms are great to use with vitamin powders so you know your frog gets a good dose!

Yea my goliath and my pyxie both have huge water bowls that they can fit in and even swim around in, but if I go anywhere near my goliath frog’s bowl while hes in there, he leaps out, jumps around the tank for a few minutes, and then burrows underground. Pretty much, theres no other way to feed him haha. Maybe I should change his substrate? But what other substrate is good for frogs? The pyxie I feed with tongs or I will just lay his food on the side of his bowl and he’ll eat from there. He seems to prefer eating in the water. And the american bullfrogs dont have any bedding at all, they are mostly aquatic so they just have a few rocks and a turtle ramp for when they want to be on land :)

I plan to give them in moderation: my staples are fuzzies and crickets (2 fuzzies a week for my pyxie, 1 a week for each american bullfrog, and the goliath is too scared to eat them so I don’t offer him any), and around a dozen or so crickets twice a week for the goliath and once for the pyxie. The Nightcrawlers just seem like a nice snack for them, and boy did he LOVE them.

My cane toad used to act just like your Goliath. My solution was to just use two dishes. One for water, one for food. She knows that if she wants food, there’ll be something in there, and I can easily glance at it a few times a night to see if maybe a refill is in order. I happen to love sphagnum moss, just not as a table cloth. Everything people say about the ease of changing paper towels is completewly true, but with a nervous animal like that I think you’re better off using the most antibacterial substrate around (which is sphagnum) and keeping the human/frog interaction down to a minimum.
Another advantage of the dish is you can dust the nightcrawlers, leave them, and they’ll stay better dusted than if you put them on the moss. Since your Allen’s isn’t eating any vertebrates, that could make a difference. Try setting him up with a dish of worms right before dark, so you’re not bothering him when he’s at his most alert and skittish. He ought to go right for them. And once he’s dish trained, you should have better luck with the occasional fuzzy as well.

I tried a dish, he didnt even go near it. But i guess my best bet is to try a larger sized, less deep dish so he can see the food better.

Also, what do oyu mean when you say "I happen to love sphagnum moss, just not as a table cloth"? Does that mean you think I should have another layer of a different bedding below it and just a very light laywe of sphagnum on top?

Thanks for the advice!

I think he just means its not good for them to eat off of because of impaction issues.

I use a 12" diameter, 4" deep food dish for a one pound toad, which is the largest amphibian I’ve actually owned. For different sizes and activity patterns you might want to play around a little bit. Maybe a kitten literbox or even a see-through Rubbermaid bin might work better. Or the answer might even be going shallower, to something more like a serving platter, or smaller, to something easier to eat out of the way a dog or iguana would, rather than going into. Not suggested with cane toads, by the way; if they want a refill and you’re late they’ll get mad and knock a small food dish around the pen, crushing all the plants as they try to make bugs fall out of it.

awww thats actually rather cute. I put in an 8oz delicup with 3 nightcrawlers in there in his tank about 5 hours ago... and 2 of them escaped... but I found them in the moss: uneaten.... I returned them to the bowl and am trying again... hopefully I’ll get a better result this time.
