 Pyxie frog substrate

i was wondering if you think it would be okay to keep pyxie frogs on wet sand so that they could form a really nice burrow. i would be about 6 inches deep and i would be saturated with water so that it would not dry them out. i was going to set up a huge pyxie frog tank like this. it is 180 gallon tank. 6 ft. x2 ft. x2 ft. i read on other web sites that it would be okay but i wanted to get an opinion from successful pyxicephalus adspersus owners. sorry about the long post.

thanks!!!!!

 Pyxie frog substrate

I wouldn’t use sand...

Many frogs when chasing crix they can be very aggressive and take mouthfuls of substrate at the same time...
With each comes risk of impaction...

Also sand being of such small sharp particles could possibly cause eye problems...

A soft soil without fertilizer or even eco earth would be better... Some mix some sand in with soil for lower levels within the substrate as some plant a moss on top (rooted).....

Insure you put drainage if setting up a natural viv...Also with burrowing frogs you need a very deep substrate. (They prefer planted tank)

The other option is less substrate with no plantings and change every couple of months depending on his waste... You can sink a couple of potted plants into the substrate so it feels planted to him... Change the soil the plant is in though to insure its safe from fertilizers....
