 Freckles and the new tank

It took forever for the silicone to set but the seperated tank is finally done. I’ve got pics of Freckles hanging out before I put him in the new tank. Again I wonder if this is truly a Leopard frog. I have my doubts.

Definitely not a leopard frog. Leopards have dorsalateral folds, no way around it.

It does have supratympanic folds like a bullfrog, and juvi bullfrogs can display similar markings, but one this age and size would have very prominent eardrums (tympanums), which I don’t see at all. (juvi green frogs can often look like this too, but they have dorsalateral folds.)

Here’s a pic of a bullfrog with very prominent eardrums, and the one below it with more camouflaged eardrums, yest still very visible. If you cannot see large eardrums, then it is not a bullfrog. If you can see the eardrum, and it is not -at least or very close- to the size of the frog’s eye, it’s still not a bull.

Other than the bullfrog, the markings etc. don’t really resemble anything native to America, can I ask where you got it from?

I could help identify with better pics from every side including the belly or at least an excellent description. Here’s one more pic that comes in handy while trying to identify a frog.

Good luck :]

 Freckles and the new tank

To be quite honest I’ve raised this little one from a tadpole. I bought it from the local petstore. I asked them what it was and they said possibly a leopard or a bull but they weren’t sure either. I think they just order and get what they get. Freckles just finished absorbing his tail last month so it may be possible that he’s still just to young to tell for sure yet???
But I do thank you for the information it was very helpful!
I’ve noticed Freckles won’t eat till it’s dark. Perhaps that is another hint? If it’s any help I live in Southeast Alabama. Now whether they order locally, I have no idea.
Thanks,
Melissa

Freckles has a creamy colored belly also. I can never get him out of hiding long enough to get really good pictures. Today was the exception since he was moving into the new habitat. Here’s his tad pics.

As you can see this was in May so he really is a baby.

With young bullfrogs the tympanum really aren’t prominent yet, mine took a while before I noticed hers really developing. I’m pretty sure it’s a bullfrog, they take about 2 years to fully mature too, so yours is still quite a baby :)

Since being in the new half and half tank he stays most of the time in the water. Doesn’t really want crickets at all it seems. He’s been eating meal worms and pheonix worms primarily. I also noticed he only eats late at night.
He’s not showing any signs of distress or illness so I’m going to assume he’s ok for now but I’d really like him to start eating gut loaded crickets soon.
I know I’ve got to change the substrate. I’ve decided I don’t like it. LOL

your facts are wrong. all young bullfrogs have eardrums the size of its eye or smaller. once they mature if the eardrum stays the size as the eye or smaller it is a female, if the eardrum gets much larger than the eye it is a male. the respond to FrecklesMom your frog is a bullfrog. they mature at about 1.5 years.
your welcome

LOL Thank you! Freckles is just a baby still. Just got the legs in June so although he/she is growing and getting fat, I still haven’t seen the eardrums properly to even try to see if it’s a boy or girl. Stinker likes to hide most of the time anyway. :0)

I can now see Freckles tympanums. Looks like Freckles is a girl. They are small, about the same size as her eye maybe just a bit smaller. The tank leaked so she’s in temporary housing till I get the leak fixed. Not a happy camper at all. LOL
