I hope someone can advise me. I have had 2 albino clawed frogs for about 3 years. All of a sudden I found my older boy frog upside down in the tank doing what looked like, gasping for air. I took him out, because he was still alive, and his hind legs weren’t moving. Right now I have him set aside in a container that has just enough water that when he lifts his head with his arms he can breathe. A couple of days ago I added a plant and my frog moves around the bowl using the roots. He never had bulging eyes, red limbs, a bloated belly, or any strange behavior. Does anyone know what causes this? Will I have to keep him in this bowl forever?? I have never experienced anything like this.

I’m sorry to hear of the injury! Do you have a filter in the tank? If so, is it over the top or underwater? Are there any hard items in the tank that he could have hurt himself on?

I’m just trying to get a sense of what the tank is like. Hopefully, someone else will answer who has a better idea of what caused it.

It sounds like nerve damage, but I have no idea what could have caused it. Maybe something’s wrong with his back, I don’t know. Is he eating? If he’s eating and is otherwise ok, I’d keep in that setup until you see change, hopefully it’ll get better, but I really don’t know what could’ve caused it.

I have a filter that is over the top. There is a cave that they use to hide in, but he didn’t have any bruising. I know that this site says that top filters are bad, but I have had my frogs for a long time and there has never been any problems. I don’t know and he seems to be eating too. I am not quite sure what could have happened. I have never heard of a paralyzed frog before.

Thanks. He is eating and doesn’t seem to have lost any weight, yet.

Well, if he’s still eating just do what you can to help him out. Eating is a good sign. Maybe it’s from a virus he might have had? Keep us posted. I’m curious as to how long he’ll live.
