Red-Eyed Tree Frog - White raised dots

Wonderful forum. Thanks to the creator and posters.

I am the proud owner of one RETF (red eyed tree frog) and he (or she) has raised white dots on his back.

I picked him up from the pet store yesterday and put him in his new terrarium. Last night the RETF seemed to try and "scratch" his back by using his back legs and also his front legs. I have read about the fungal infection Oodinium and wondering if that is what is. The only treatment that I found on the internet is a 50/50 solution of hydrogen peroxide applied with a small paint brush. Can anyone offer any assistance? There are absolutely NO vets in my area that would touch this wonderful creature. I have also read the horrors of red leg disease which really concerns me because the coloring that is showing on my RETF where his back leg attaches to his body has a red tinge to it which I am hoping is a natural coloring. Thank to anyone in advance that may be able to help me.

When frogs are shedding they rub their legs across their bodies to remove the loose skin. Are you sure it was not doing that?
Can you show us a pic of your frog? I would not treat this frog unless you are sure there is something wrong.
Is it eating and going potty? What are the temp and humidity inside the tank?

That is EXACTLY what he is doing!!!! I cannot thank you enough for your info. He did eat one cricket last night (that I actually saw and I am hoping he is eating more when I am sleeping) and I did see his poop (again last night) As for the temp (2 gauges, one is digital) which reads 77 degrees during the day (but I will be getting a small wattage light and a timer today) and as for the humidity... I have three gauges in the tank (I didn’t trust just one) two Flukers that reads 85% and the Zoo-Med that reads 60. Since I have the long weekend off I am really monitoring the tank to make any adjustments. I will also be getting the Habba automatic Mister to make sure the humidity is up. Again, thank you so much for your advice. I am not going do any treatments at all.

Thanks again. I do have another question... is it normal that the frog opens and closes his mouth very very frequently?

They usually do that when they are shedding. But it is not normal if they do it all the time.

Thank you. Will I visibly see "the shed"? or is it so transparent that I won’t? He has either "beefed up" or is slightly bloated for the past 2 nights. Is that common when they shed? I really do appreciate you answering all my questions. I guess I am now finding myself to be the surrogate "mother" of an alien life form and I don’t know what to expect or look for that may or may not be out of the ordinary. He is eating, croaking, crawling, has clear eyes, no blisters or unusual bumps and is quite alert. Thanks again. Tank temp is 76-78 during the day at 70-80% humidity. My plan is (once I know that he is happy and healthy) is to get him a tank mate and hope that they mate.

Sometimes you can see the shed, but not always. They usually eat it fairly quickly.
They don’t normally bloat when shedding.
Remember if you get another one it should be quarantined for at least 30 days before adding it in with the other.
You should do alot of research, before trying to breed it is alot of work and can get very expensive. Make sure you have a plan of what you are going to do with 100’s of babies.

Thank you, I didn’t see the shed but he was really yawning last night and contorting after each yawn as if he was digesting something large. He is definitely pooping on a regular basis. He is using a shallow dish that I put in his tank to do that in. I think the bloating was really what a healthy frog should like. He is not so much as bloated now as "full figured". I think maybe he was more dehydrated/skinny when I first got him so it looked like something was not normal with his size. He looks more proportioned now. Wow 100’s of babies, eeeeeekkk, I do need a plan, maybe many many plans. I will be sure to set up a second habitat and properly quarantine his mate. I will try to attach some pics and if you don’t mind giving me your opinion on my setup. Please keep in mind that the frog is awake only due to the fact that I woke him up moving the plant around. You can actually see the raised white dots that I was so concerned about in the last pic. Thank you.

Your frog looks fine. Calm down new mommy. lol
The white dots you are talking about are normal.

Do alot of research before breeding, it can take alot of time and money. Google breeding red eye tree frogs and read everything you can.

Here is one link: Link

I would put an aquarium background on the tank and maybe on the sides too. Makes the tank look nicer and it gives the frog a little more privacy, which keeps them happy.
You could also hang some fake plants up at the top to vine down for more hides and block some of the brightness from the light.

Thank you very much for your suggestions and your guidence. I really do appreciate it. Thanks for the link! I guess it’s not easy being green after all! lol (I loved the new mommy joke!) I will be sure to do all the research PRIOR to breeding. Have a great weekend and keep your fingers crossed that Hurricane Ike leaves Florida with very little damage. I currently reside in Sarasota county. Take care

I just bought my red eyed frog yesterday and he’s awsome! So I won’t be of much help, but I have a lot of questions.
Is it ok to pick up or touch your frog? Will it be awhile before he eats. I don’t thing he’s had lunch I bought him.
