We were told it was a Chilean Mountain Frog..... then a Brazilian Rain Forest Frog. Since they did not know what it was, they really had no information to give, except that it eats a ton of crickets (20 a day). The side of the tank simply said "Mountain Frog" I figured I could find out what kind it was on the internet so that we can get a really cool habitat together for it. Right now it is in this tiny 10 gallon tank that the store had it in. We don’t know where to start. I have searched the internet for countless hours and weeded through a zillion images of frogs. I have not found any that have come close. Does it swim? Like trees? Need a fogger? Okay with plants? Dry/Wet...... I got crickets! :) It has the most beautiful gold eyes - they look like they are made of fine gold glitter. He/She has a white belly with spots. The backs of the legs also have a rose color and a yellow color. His sides have a rose color as well. He is big... with fat/chunky legs.... and no toe webbing. He sounds like a dove cooing. He is also very sweet and likes to climb to your shoulders if you hold him. Here are some pictures.

This may seem strange.... but I swear the yellow on the back of its legs changes from tan to bright yellow...... there is nothing yellow in the tank so it is not a reflection. It may be the lighting or angle though. We don’t want to handle it too much..... just want to get a mini forest together for it. |

Anyway, while I had to resist (money issues), I did do a tad of research. They need a 30-40 gallon tank, mostly land, but with a nice water area (not too deep, but wide enough to fit the whole frog). For substrate I would use coconut fiber (eco earth is great), kept moderately moist. I don’t remember temps or humidity, but if you google smokey jungle frog you should be able to find that out. You can feed them crickets (dusted with a calcium supplement once a week), earthworms, minnows, baby mice, and anything else you can think of that’ll fit in it’s mouth...which is a lot. It looks like a girl to me, by the way...though I could be wrong. Congrats on him/her, it’s a really great looking frog, maybe one day I’ll be able to get one too :) |

Does this sound like the right direction for our new family member? I cannot stand looking at it in that 10 gallon aquarium - it was in there for about 6 months too! She/he was $85.00. Our 6 year old called them and told them that he finally had 74.60. They took it..... and threw in the tank it was in and a bunch of crickets. Any other info appreciated! And thanks again! |

So should I think rain forest as far as humidity? How humid is that exactly? The noxious secretions has me a bit wiggy..... but this one is obviously use to being handled. Smokey Jungle Frog or South American Bullfrog (Leptodactylus pentadactylus) Central American bullfrog; Slender-fingered bladder frog; Smoki jungle frog, Giant Jungle Frog Mountain Chicken Frog? Link Here is what it sounds like! How cool is this! Link Diet: Juveniles feed on small arthropods, but large adults feed on large arthropods, frogs, lizards, snakes, and small birds and mammals. Defensive mechanisms include noxious skin secretions and posturing by inflating the lungs and elevating the body on all four limbs. When grasped, these frogs usually emit a high-pitched scream similar to that of a baby crocodile 5"-8" long. It is one of the largest frogs in Costa Rica. From northern Honduras to the Pacific lowlands of Ecuador and throughout the Guianas and northern two-thirds of the Amazon Basin in South America. Smokey jungle frogs are excellent jumpers, but their powerful thigh muscles often land them on human dinner plates. Now threatened due to volcanoes and chefs. :( |

yeah I’d say to keep it tropical-ish, warm, humid...I guess read the cues of the frog and see what works/or stresses out the frog (frogs tend to get very dark when stressed and unhappy). The price you got was pretty great too, the one I wanted was being sold for $150, about double what you paid :/ |
