 Arrow Frog Questions.

I want to get an arrow frog and i read that their poop is so small that with live plants in the terrarium the plant with use it as fertilizer. My mom likes that. I was wondering how hard they are to take are of i know it’s going to be expensive. I want a green and black arrow frog. Is the poop thing true? Also is there anything else i should know?

keeping dart frogs is a bit of challenge in the beginning..

culturing their food items is the main thing that someone looking to start in this hobby should get down to a T before buying any frogs..

also, setting up the appropriate tank for them is key.. they need higher humidity then most frogs.. often as high as 90-100 percent on a regular basis..as well as rather large tanks for the Tinctorius species and smaller (roughly 15-20 gallons ) for the thumbnail species..

i would suggest looking at dart frog forums.. and seeing if they cant give you some pointers...

Right now, i have thumbnail dart frogs and a trio of Leucomela dart frogs..

as for the poop thing, yes their poop can be left in the tank and used as fertilizer for the plants..

good luck!!

i don’t have any experience with amphibian or reptiles so maybe they aren’t a good choice. I didn’t realize they were so fragile.

amphibians, in general, are fragile.... they are not as hardy and forgiving as say a dog/cat..

if you are looking at getting a frog, i would suggest a White’s tree frog or a firebelly toad... very basic beginner amphibians and very easy to care for..

good luck!!

If you plan on getting dart frogs, get a UVA bulbs for the live plants they require, and a UVB bulb for the frogs themselves. The plants require 4-5 inches of soil and a way for them to drain. As a whole, they can be quite expensive for the initial startup. Their food source (fruitflies) are relatively easy to care for. You should look into tropical terrariums/vivariums before you look into the dart frog species themselves. The green and black variety (Dendrobates auratus) is one of the most popular species and isn’t as shy as some. Good luck with whatever you decide on!
