What do you guys use for....?

Pacman frog cages? Who uses tubs and who uses tanks? One problem I have been having is keeping humidity around 70, it drops down to 50 in between misting of the cage which I figured it would be easier to keep humidity up in a tub.....Oh and also I’ve heard they don’t move around much but he doesn’t move at all, even at night? Maybe he is just acclimating to the cage? I thought it was maybe just because in the pet store, he was in a TINY critter keeper and hes not used to a big cage. But I don’t know....

Help would be VERY appreciated.....

Thanks
Emily

I used both. A big tank will make it difficult for a young pacman to find his food. You don’t need to maintain that constant high humidity as long as you have fresh water. Don’t let it dry out completely, but you don’t have to be frantic about it. Mixing up the substrate to air it out now and then will help keep bacteria levels down too. I had simple setups. Eco earth, shallow water bowl. Worked like a charm.

What size cage do you suggest? I have him in a 10 gallon. But, have tons of small tanks/critter keepers. Thank you so much by the way:)

Questions from my boyfriend:
What do you suggest feeding him?
Did you tweezer feed or let them hunt?
What time of day is the best to feed him?
How big does he need to be before he starts eating mice?

10 gallon is fine. I would feed crickets, roaches, earthworms as a staple. Best time to feed is at night, or turn the lights off an hour early on him and before you hit the sack toss in some food. Babies can be very shy. Sometimes feeding tongs work. A lot of times the frog will not eat in front of you until they are used to you and their new home. It might not eat for a few days right now as it gets used to it’s enviornment. Don’t let that worry you. Don’t feed it for 2 days and then on the night of the 3rd offer some appropriately sized crickets. Anything as long as his mouth is wide will do for a pacman.

Mice can be fed early on. As they get older you’ll actually want to cut back on the rodent feedings. A friend of mine who raises and breeds giant pixies and pacmans said that there has been a recent rash of deaths of some of the bigger specimines in captivity that have had a high rodent diet. The rodents are high in fat and it leads to kidney failure and death usually if fed too often. As a little guy a month between baby mice is fine. As an adult you’ll want to space the feedings out over a longer period of time. Personally I fed them adult mice maybe once every 3-4 months. Lots of people want to feed baby rats instead of adult mice. I’m against this though, because a baby rat is very high in fat, while an adult mouse will have more lean muscle mass. Remember to get a vitamin/calcium dust to dust their food with. I dusted every feeding almost with young ones as they grow. Adults I did it every other or every 3rd time. Good luck!

Sadly a lot of the literature is outdated. I think the fatfrogs web forum is down, but www.talkto.thefrog.com and toadallyfrogs.com have some people who specialize in large frogs. Personally I kept pacmans, pixies, and smokey jungle chicken frogs, as far as big frog go. As far as the humidity goes, keep the substrate moist to the touch, but if you pick up a fistful and squeeze it, no water should drip out, or not much. That’s a better guage than a dial hygrometer that has a plus minus 20% error usually.

Glad to help anyone who’s interested in keeping a happy healthy animal. Best wishes, pacmans are great and as they get used to you they have great indignant personalities.

Thank you very much =) All the info you have given me has helped a TON. I completely agree on the books being out-dated. I haven’t read any herp books worth reading IMO. But I just find it funny that someone asks a question on a forum for info and they tell them "get a book"....But oh well. Do baby frogs croak a lot? he seems to do it at night some.
