Finally!! May need a bit of help?

I was lucky enough for someone to be throwing out a perfectly good 50 gallon tank that was used for (from what I can see) some type of turtle, it came with lighting and other useful things to use for the frogs I wanted for such a long time. I have placed an order for two medium sized bullfrogs and they should be coming in about two-three days. So far I have everything I need...except a filter, should I just use a regular turtle filter? or would a fish filter do? Also for the land section I am using very large rocks (Large enough that they can’t swallow) on half of the tank, is there anything else I can use in the future that won’t make a huge mess like coconut fiber? could I use repti-bark or could that also be swallowed? any other helpful information on these frogs will be very helpful.

I would silicone the rocks and some driftwood together. Thus making your land section. Take loose substrate out of the equation entirely. You can pick up willow or java moss and get it to grow in the water or out. I tie mine to driftwood and rocks and get them covered in green moss. You really need to have your setup up and running before you put the frogs in. A fish tank will take a month to cycle through the toxic periods. Same goes for the water section of a frog tank. I let my silicone cure for at least 1-2 weeks before I put water on it much less animals.

Turtle filters are a waste of money. You need something strong enough to handle the water section of a 50 gallon tank.

So what kind of filter would you recommend for my tank? This is my first time actually having a tank this big and my first time owning frogs ( I own toads but care is of course totally different).

Penguin with it’s biowheel is a middle of the road great filter. Not too expensive and it preforms well. I like Hagen products myself, though now I just use Japanese brands. Stay away from Tetra products, they are made as cheap as they cost.
