Where are you located? I ask because in Ohio with the introduction of fertilizers and chemicals into the ground water supply there has been an increase in deformed amphibians among the native species in the last few decases. Because of their porous skin and life cycle frogs and other amphibians are more susceptible to environmental changes and pollutants than other species. They’re considered an indicator species- they’re usually the first animals to show changes when something very wrong is happening in the environment. Some years after the frogs started showing deformations in their legs and heads the Bald Eagles started having issues with the structural integrity of their eggs- the shells were so weak that when the female sat on the nest the eggs would just shatter- the culprit was found to be DDT, a commonly used farm chemical, or more accurately it was what DDT turned into when it degraded in the environment. There was a great deal of legal controversy over this, it was difficult to prove that the degraded DDT was the culprit because the scientists had to prove that the change in chemical structure of the DDT in the environment was in fact changing over time.... Trying wiki’ing DDT - there’s more infor there. You might find it interesting to show the DDT information and frog images, then look in your own area and nationwide, and research what the next "DDT" like substance is likely to be... Ie. what is the next big man-made threat - nationwide scientists are constantly looking at why amphibians are changing in their own areas- look at the theories they’re coming up with- any common threads? Do some seems more feasible than others? Are some just so outrageous they’re likely improbable? It’s ok to be critical of the pro’s on a science fair project, just make sure you back it up with sound fact-based reasoning. |
